My pepper patch

The back row is tomatos,the next row are crimson sweet peppers, the two front rows are a mix of 2 jalapenos, 2 fatalli , 1 golden hab, 3 red savina and 3 congo brown habs. This pic was taken on 5/19 which is one week following transplanting.

Here is a pic of my little garden now June 4th. I know the plants are a bit close together but I don't have alot of space. I would appreciate opinions on the growth rate. For some reason they seem to be growing slow to me. I plan to post further updates if anyone is interested. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated!

Habs just seem to grow slow at first. Might be the ground temp that holds them up. Perhaps the air temp but my bet is the ground temp is the larger factor.

I also have a theory that the roots keep growing and then when they hit their limit( pots size, hard ground, etc. ) then the plants above ground limbs take off from there. Just another experiment for another time.

Not all varieties of rhubarb are red, the green varieties may get a little red. There is little to no difference in the taste of red and green varieties. If you want redder sauces and jams, you can add food colouring. If the stalks get too large they get more fibrous, but since they are usually cooked to mush for sauces, jams, pies etc they are still usable. Rhubarb will flower if allowed to mature and the crowns do spread and put up new buds. Since you haven't harvested yours, it is growing well. You can divide the crown into separate plants by digging and cutting them apart, do this in early spring or fall, not now at the height of summer heat. Haha...Bruce, it's not quite as high-tech as it sounds ;-) And it didn't work any way, so I can't say that I'd recommend it, really. Armac, I'm glad you asked that question. This Thread's about to max out, so it'll be good to have these pics here for posterity. I use two main screening items. The first is a plastic flat from a nursery, normally used for carrying plants. The squares in the plastic are 1/4 inch. I use this to remove the large particles of bark - only the particles that are 1/4 inch or less fall through. I collect everything that falls through the plastic flat into a large pond-basket. The pond-basket has 1/8 and 1/16 inch holes all around the outside and bottom. When I shake or rinse the ingredients, the fine dust and particulate is flushed out the containers. *I also have some aluminum door/window screen that is 1/16 of an inch. I occasionally use this to remove the fines from Turface in particular. The nursery flat and a pond-basket: Set the plastic flat on top of the pond-basket, add a couple handfuls of bark. The appropriately sized pieces of bark fall into the pond-basket where the fine bark dust can be rinsed or shaken out. Josh

I haven’t had this experience (yet) because I haven’t embarked on my new gardening lifestyle. But, next spring will be a new day. I wonder if this damage occurs mostly in the spring, or if it is related to the birds raising young. Baby birds cannot eat seeds, and parents need to find insects or worms to feed their growing family. If insects are in short supply, maybe they resort to leaves. Are those of you who have had damage located in cities or suburbs, where there might be a limited supply of wild plants or insects? Maybe try planting a bed of sprouts for the birds and covering the real garden. They might also need the moisture from the leaves, if there isn’t a nearby source of water. Install a bird bath? Just my ponderings.

Kevin, Tom, Tom, Sandy, Pam, and Alex, thanks so much :-) I am very pleased with the Peach Bhut, especially now that it is producing. I had my doubts at first. I love the bushy shape of the plant, as well as the look of the pods. My hope, however, is that some of the pods get longer - closer to the length of other Bhut Jolokias. Kevin, a little shade throughout the day should really help the plants cope. It has been hot up here, too....we're in the 100F's this week....but hoping for a dip into the 90F's this weekend. As for the pod size....a few of my plants set pods earlier on, then there was a heat-wave before the next set of pods; so now those earliest pods are large, with all the others behind in development. Tom_92, that Ghost is great, isn't it? It obviously has plenty of Nitrogen, which is probably why it has only set a couple pods compared to the lower profile Ghost beside it. I am contemplating moving it a little further out into the sun, and holding off on fertilizer for a week or so. TomT226, thanks! "meager" in that I've only got 6 superhots growing...! Alex, thanks! Using those plastic flats to shade the containers on the south side has made growing in these #5 containers much more effective. A single hole at the rim of the pot would allow you to wire one of these flats in place, I bet. My garden is shaded (mosaic sun) most of the day....but from about 11:00 - 1:00, the main pepper patch gets blasted with sun. Going from shade to full sun is incredibly hard on the plants, so I've got to keep the containers cool. You're right about the watering needs - now that we're in "drought" conditions, I've been mindful of how much water I use and where it goes, and shade helps. That was the primary reason for using more drip-trays this season, as well. The frogs are pretty happy with those drip-trays, too ;-) Tomatoes use a lot of water, no way around it. I have a Sun Gold in a 15-gallon pot on my back deck, and it's also in a concrete mixing tub (to protect the deck) that allows me to fill with an inch or two of water on hot days. Growth rate looks good to me!

Yes, keep posting pics. Too back there's not a 'viewed by' counter so you could see how many times your pics have been seen.

Your soil looks good, so why the pots? Warmth? Over-wintering inside?

Those aren't pots. The black things you see at the base of the 3 plants in the middle and the 4 plants in the back are "tomato savers". They are two peices of plastic that snap together at the base of the plant to prevent cutworm, warm the roots, catch and slowly drain rain water to the main rootball and keep the soil damp around the rootball. The tomato savers that they sell now are red but I bought mine a long time ago and they only came in black which I prefer. I mainly use them now because I have them.

An update of my pepper patch. The habaneros have grown ALOT and I now have a tightly knit habanero hedge. I have pods on all of them and more are setting. I should have my first ripe Hab(congo brown) in a week or two. I missed a flower when I was pinching and now have an unusually large single green pod.

My first semi-ripe Hab. Its a golden Habanero. Its a bit orange but was on its way to gold. I was looking at it and touched it and it just fell off the plant. Its still hot as hell. A light sweet citrus flavor with a delayed heat that started at the back of my throat, took away my breath and then burned to the tip of my tongue and made my lips buzz. NICE!! Makes all the work and fuss worth it.
