HELP! how do I take care of a zamia floridada(cardboard Palm)

I am very new to these types of plants. I had seem a cradboard Palm in Ft Meyers on a visit and became totally taken by it's unusualness(well... I thought it was pretty cool!). I was given one not too long after and I over wintered it in the house and now I want to repot it and move it outside. BUT... I don't want to kill it either (it's already stressed enough from being inside and losing many of its leaves) Anyway, I know nothing about taking care of these. When I put it out it will be on a deck under oaks. The light is filtered. Right now it is in a 12" (around the top)x maybe 10" high pot. It doesn't look as though it has much soil. The plant is a good 36" tall and has a pretty good spread. Any advice about potting soil, fertilizing etc you can share would be greatly appreciated. thanks! ds
