Another Tree Peony About to Bloom

Here is a picture of Gong Yang Zhuang or Palatial Adornment which is threatening to open anyday. I planted these TPs last fall and this one has 14 flowers to bloom.

What a pretty color and form. It looks like a cupped David Austin rose. Thank you for posting your tree peonies flowers.

They're both really pretty!! Is this one of the end of season purchases from Tree Peony Farm? If so it's a good advertisement for them! That's huge for just being planted last fall...

I've had to laugh at myself: I too feel that spring has been *at least* a month early. In that spirit, I planted the front flower beds in March (after the forsythia bloomed). All the garden columnists were saying 'don't set out plants yet' and 'we'll still be hit by frost' and similar nay-says. They weren't wrong ~ a good bit of the surrounding area *did* get near-frost temps recently. One night, I tossed a light row-cover over the beds of snapdragons, marigold, petunias, alyssum, and celosia; and over the tomatoes in the garden. The next morning the temp was 38, but that has been the closest to frost in my neighborhood. I'm getting ready to plant the beans in the veg garden. I usually do that a couple weeks after the flower beds, which are done just as the forsythia fades. It gives me pause to see the calendar is still in April.

Of course I have no idea what your soil is like. For mine I top dress each year with compost around each plant. My soil is clay/loam so it is fairly rich to start, but I could imagine with a lean soil your peony may be hungry for nutrients. Al

Seidai & Homei Tree Peonies in Bloom

Thanks, I got them at the Heartland Peony Society Sale last fall. The price was right and I figured getting 2 of them would be enough for me to try them out. After comparing the 2 that I got, I'm partial to the semi-double Seidai bloom vs the Homei which is more open with fewer petals. The semi-double to double will probably withstand the wind better, so that's one of the reasons I like it. Of course, if I had some spots that weren't so windy, that wouldn't be an issue; but last Saturday the wind was so strong it blew my grill over. I can't really compare the number of blooms this year vs previous because this is the 1st year my peonies will bloom. I'll have gone from 0 blooms to somewhere in the +30's. I'm pretty excited about it and will take more pictures when they bloom. I'm hoping others will do the same...I like to see real world examples of what varieties look like vs. the same pictures that growers display each year. (That's why I also posted a picture of the grower tags of my tree peonies, so I could compare that to the real thing that I have).

Well, well, I learn something new every day. The photos show a peony that could quite possibly be mine. Thank you very much, Lizbest1! I won't take it as 100% proven that my red peony is Shima-nishiki, but consider it a strong possibility. Tree peonies sold locally mostly come without names, so I'm not well positioned to research them. Thanks again.

I don't know if I could cut them off, either! Not a concern for me, my newly purchased tree peonies aren't going to bloom anytime soon. Yours certainly looks bigger than a 2 year old plant, I'm shopping their end of season sale this year!

Has your peony flower opened yet? Please post photo of the bloom when it opens. It looks exquisite even in this close to open form.

They are all really beautiful! I am really partial to the light pink one not only for its beautiful form and color but also for its floriferousness. That is a great buy!

Gorgeous! I've always favored the lighter pink peonies myself(though I'm currently trying to grow a few different colored ones), but they are both lovely flowers!

It hurt me but today I cut the rest of the blooms off of all of these plants. As suggested by treepeonygarden, the blooms were removed so the plant could direct it's energy to root and plant development. I look forward to next year.

I am sure your tree peonies are very happy. But it is very nice of the trees to give you the blooms this year to let you know what they look like.
