repotting a potted peony
Comments (1)Peonies do much better in the ground but I assume you have no choice. Peonies are long lived, I am sure all my peonies will out live me. Potting mixes unfortunately are not long lived. A seven gallon pot may look large when you lift it to move it but is still pretty minimum for a peony. Peat based soil mixes are short lived. Look for a bark based mix for a longer life. You may have a problem getting enough winter chill where you live. Peonies require a minimum of 400 hours below 45 degrees. If not enough chilling flower buds will not form. Plant high enough that your buds are exposed to air temperatures in the winter when the plant is dormant. Al...See MoreQuestion about removing and potting peonies.
Comments (1)Have you thought of selling them bareroot in the fall? You can certainly pot them up in the fall but you'd have to take a lot of care that they don't freeze/thaw/freeze.....that will kill the roots. If you have room in an unheated garage it would probably work--gets cold enough to chill the roots but not completely freeze...You could certainly dig and pot them in the spring but the growth for the season would probably be negatively impacted....See MorePotted peonies already coming up in garage! Comments (15)Actually I wish I was kidding. A friend of mine at the U of A write her thesis paper on the unique situation Alberta and its plants are in. i will try to keep this as brief as possible. Apparently some of the chemicals that are produced when they burn off gas and oil well gases bond to the nitrite particles in the air. You will notice this if you pay particular attention to the sky around noon during spring. It is quite evident that it the color has changed from that dark "blue bird" color we are used to seeing. Anyways what this does is allow a certain wave length of radiation through that has been named TVASR (thermoVascular Adaptive Solar Radiation). The effect on plants is much like UV on humans that causes a sunburn as it causes a "burn", for brevity, that hinders the chlorophylls ability to synthesize sunlight. While it is still to early in the new study to know how dramatic the affects are on plants proper hardening off is increasingly important. Yet they do know that s "burn" from TVASR can hinder flower and fruit production. TVASR has also been linked to plants dropping flowers and damaged buds, much like frost, and to plant death that we before attributed to winter kill. So please take the time to harden off properly. I can get the link to the paper for those who wish to read it . Sorry to be so long winded. SCG...See MoreCan I plant a potted peony into the ground in the fall?
Comments (11)No do not plant at the same level as in the pot. That is something that you can do with other plants but not peonies. Most nurseries do not take the time to place the roots in the pot at the proper depth. Most roots are too large to plant into pots that way so they are just put in and covered. This fall take them out of the pot. Wash all of the potting material off. Then locate where the majority of the eyes are. Plant those at the proper depth. Think about how peonies grow. Most do not grow vertically the way nurseries are forced to put them in pots but at move of a 45 degree angle. Nurseries would need larger pots and more potting material to do it correctly which increases the cost. Smaller pot with root just stuck in and covered is cheaper and as seen above most people would not know the difference. Lizbest does know the difference and she wrote the correct way to handle a peony that has been in a pot....See More- 15 years ago
