I have a 3 year old hydrangea and it has never bloomed....
Comments (3)You move it down into my yard!!! But seriously....zone 6 is borderline for the bloom buds to survive through the winter, so you might want to give it some protection in the winter. Just how one protects a 7ft tall plant is another dilema. Burlap? The other most common reason for non-blooming is improper pruning. Never prune in fall or spring (or at all if possible) except to deadhead old flowers. To size, prune only in summer, immediately after blooming. Good luck next year...yg...See MoreBuds but never blooms
Comments (1)I just came across this today...taken from the site linked below: Bud blast (environmental) Bud blast is a condition where flower buds abort. It is caused by planting too deep. It covers many problems found in many landscape plants. I knew peonies would not bloom if they were planted too deep, but was not aware they would put up buds, and the buds abort as a result of them being too deep. It sounds like this is the year to 'lift' Mom's huge peony, and plant it a little more shallow. Comments (1)Borde, There could be many reasons for the buds not to open. The Heartland Peony Society has a great site with FAQs. Check out the "Peony Buds Don't Open" section. Here is a link that might be useful: Heartland Peony Society FAQs...See MoreMoving a just emerging 4 year old peony?
Comments (7)I know it is not the optimal time. But I installed a large decorative gate right in the middle of the garden. The peony is right smack dab in the center of the foreground. Even if it started growing well this year, it would be too tall, and no longer work with the design. I don’t want to wait till fall to get the other low height plantings in. The other peonies have done so well, that I do blame the light conditions. Though I don’t recall specific details of this planting, I am aware of the planting depth issue, as I had a non-blooming peony at a previous house, 30 years ago, due to not knowing enough at that time. The ones I planted since 2012 have bloomed. The big question is that I don’t know how big of a root ball this one will have (with 4 shoots so far). I will try working around it with a pitchfork first, and see what I can feel without chopping something off. Like a 1 foot + diameter? 18 inches?...See MoreTulsaRose
