Kelgalon: I think we need to clear up what seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding about blackberry canes. Blackberries are biennials that grow up new primocanes each spring. After wintering over, they are ready to blossom and form fruit, at which point they are called floricanes. Blackberry canes are not permanent structures like fruit trees; they are in a constant process of regrowth and renewal. At the end of the fruiting season, the spent floricanes turn brown and die, and should be cut off at ground level. That may be the situation your original cane is in now, but don't try to remove the new primocane that is coming up beside it or you will reduce your own blackberry crop next season. After your planting is better established, new canes may appear farther from the original plant, and that is when you can dig them up to share, should you choose to do so. I just received three raspberries, and a currant from Indiana Berry, and the raspberries are huge, single cane over pencil size, ton's of roots, and were only $3.25 and $3.00. The currant was a little small, but I didn't expect a giant plant anyway. So great price, large size, if you need to pinch pennies, this is your company. All were bare root and dormant. Packaged extremely well. This company is awesome to say the least! I would order from them with pleasure any day. The next day I received one bare root from American Meadows. The raspberry was small, not packaged well at all, and dried out. It may not make it? Have you seen the raspberry packaging at Home Depot, well it was like that, unsealed, dry, and put in a box too small, so the cane was bent and broke a few inches above dirt. It was not damaged in shipping, it was damaged putting it in the too small box! Idiots! I know this will not hurt the plant at all, but it just goes to show how this company could give a rip. Avoid them like the plague! Four times the cost too! The only place I could find that had Kiwi Gold. A shame because this is an excellent cultivar. It has lost favor for whatever reason? Looking for Valentina. Willing to trade suckers. I have many cultivars here. All the gold ones I could find. Cascade Gold, Honey Queen, Fall Gold, Double Gold, Kiwi Gold (if it makes it?), and Anne.

Hi Lisa- Congratulations on your 300 Triple Crowns! My goodness, that's going to be a ridiculous amount of berries! I know nothing of commercial farming, but if I had to pick a blackberry to do a U-Pick with, it would probably be TC. With your 300 plants, I look forward to what you can teach me! Of course Olpea is correct, as always. 6 feet between plants would be an absolute minimum. I'd shoot for more like 8 feet being optimal. ... Though, by keeping them so low, perhaps I'd shoot for 10' (or even more) between plants. (though it's probably too late for this advice!) I'm curious, though, why you'd want to keep them at 3-4' in height... Surely your average picker can pick well beyond that. I struggle to keep mine at 8'.... having to top them 3 or 4 times during the season. Is it really worth sacrificing so much of the plant so that you don't need a trellis? (though I guess 50% less height doesn't necessarily mean 50% less yield) I've got to believe it's going to require constant pruning to keep it at those height? Have you ever considered planting another variety to extend your UPick season? Doyle comes to mind. Let us know how it works out! -Glenn

Unless you are in the Texas Highlands, I would keep those in the pots, and in mostly shade, and water them enough just so the pots have a little heft; make sure the water is penetrating to the roots and not just running down the sides and out the holes. Plant out maybe 1 October. Prune off dead areas anytime.
