FernLeaf Peony

Now that the fernleaf peony is 4" high should I be seeing a bud in the centre? As of today I see nothing but it was just planted last year. Looks very healthy so far.

I have read where the peony is a slow developing plant. This coming September I plan to move mine to a better spot this some rich manured soil, well drained, I hope.
Planted last year ?
From a root, right , but how large ?
I'm sure mine is peony, but I saw no flowers last year - far too much rain !

I've wanted a fern leaf for so long, but just couldn't afford the $40 price tag. I came across a private home that was selling perennials and he knew I was an avid flower gardener. He offered his one and only red fern leaf offshoot for $l5 and I grabbed it. I put it in our dairy barn for the winter since I didn't get it planted, and I couldn't find it for the rest of the winter. I finally got all my plants out of the barn yesterday and found the peony, (POOR thing), growing,(but mostly white from no light) and with one nice bud on it. I didn't even water it all winter. I feel so guilty!!!! Poor thing is trying to grow and bud in a dark barn with no water. I guess they are very sturdy plants!

Bought my first fern-leaf peony ('Itoba') a week ago at Mori Nurseries in Niagara-on-the-Lake. As per Morz, have planted it like any other peony, except for the location (in this case at the front of a border). Mine has two buds, formerly presumably eyes, and (just from reading) it looks like flowering may be delayed a year because of the spring planting. Still it was half price. Below, my inspiration to buy that plant. Picture: May 9, 2013 at the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens (Canadian side). This plant is labelled as the species.

Hi: I ordered it from Lindenberg Seeds in Manitoba. I can't find the instructions right now but I did amend the soil for proper drainage and followed the planting instructions. The root was a nice size when it arrived. I even put a metal cage over the plant to make sure the squirrels didn't dig it out. I was so looking forward to seeing it grow. I did find the tag and it says full sun or part shade and add organic matter to the planting hole. I'll keep looking to see if anything comes up but I have my doubts. Betty

Have you been regularly adding compost or manure to maintain soil fertility? Is the peony still in full sun or has a tree grown enough to shade it part or most of the day? Has the soil built up over the roots making it too deep now? Twenty years is not too long without dividing, but you can divide in the dormant period, which will give you a chance to improve the soil.
