On Carsten's list Adelmans had it at one time. Not in current catalog but if you ask they may have some in storage or could tell you when they plan to sell it again.

Keep looking as several of the Canadian nurseries that supply garden centers have also had it.

You can try growing them from seeds. On eBay, they always have the auctions for 20 seeds, starting at 99 cents and they come in all different colors so you might find the kind that you want. They even sometimes have the one for 50 seeds at 99 cents which is harder to bid, but I've won it before a few times at the starting bid.

If they are planted now, most of them will likely germinate spring of 2013, but they are very rewarding and I believe they are well worth the wait, if you have a spare garden bed or pots for them. They also have a very high germination rate. Here's my latest blog on them.

Steve, I hope you realize that peony seeds do not provide the parent plant. The only way for someone to get the plant they want is to purchase a division. So suggesting planting seeds to obtain a specifice cultivar should not be done. I realize you like planting peony seeds but it is not for everyone.

Are you saying that all the different seeds that are listed as specific types all over eBay for specific types won't yield the flower as advertised?

I have enough planted so that I can find out eventually, but it's hard to imagine that the sellers would have so many different types listed if they knew it might not give the same flower as the parent plant. I chose certain colors which I am hoping to get once they get to blooming size.

I'm still kind of new to this kind of plant, but I'm planning on having a huge collection of them eventually.

Seeds may look like one of the the parent plants, but like children, may end up looking like aunt Clara! None will be exactly the same.When listing seeds, the hybridizer usually only lists the pod parent, often not knowing the pollen parent.

Steve that is exactly what I have been writing ever since you started posting about planting seeds.

Maybe I'll come out with some new species given since I have so many of them germination, and I guess separating out all the seeds by the variety hardly means anything if they will likely emerge with that much variation.

Anyways, one of the peony nurseries with the largest selection is this one here, but I still didn't fine the light yellow, single layer nova type that was mentioned. There are some that are similar.

Steve might be right in expecting his seedlings to closely their parents. This happens when the seeds come from self pollination rather than cross pollination.
Years ago a batch of seed from a single unknown tp produced a series of plants whose blooms all closely resemle eachother.
The lack of diversity strongly suggests that they are all selfs,
not products of cross pollination.
This observation has challenged my long held belief that tps are self infertile. The question of whether tps are self fertile or not can only be answered by very few people.

The selfing is common. That is why serious breeders remove the pollen bearing parts as soon as they can open the bud. Some remove all of the petals at the same time, others will leave them. They then cover the carpel with bag, envelope etc until they see weeping on the carpel. Depending on peony the carpels can then have pollen applied and the carpel recovered. Some will accept the pollen when the weeping starts but others wait until the weep is tacky to the touch.

At one time I was very interested in breeding for pot size tree peonies however now am of the opinion that intersectionals will work as pot plants better than the smaller tp's.

After emasculation, the carpels can be washed with a mister to remove any spilled pollen.
Some breeders believe that presence of multiple types of pollen greatly increases seed set.

Some of the TP seeds I got from you are germinating today after getting into the 80s. They were a bit slow maybe because they got shade on the west side, but I'm expecting the ones that were rooted last year to come up. Also some of the ones that got freeze burned leaves are regenerating new leaves, so I'll make sure these are protected as 1st year sprouts are way less hardy than more mature ones.

I actually am not that concerned if not all of them come up as the variety they are supposed to be as long as I get a good variety of them at the end which I won't know until they start flowering.
