Tree peony grafting

I received a copy of July 1840 ussye if The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany. There is a small piece on page 242 if a translation from a French magazine on tree peony grafting in it. "The operation of grafting is performed betwee July 13, and August 13". The drawing shows regular graft. This would take two to three years. But it also mentions a method by M. Soulange Bodin. "after grafting places the plant in a pot, plunges it in heat, and covers it with a bell-glass. By September the scion has united itseft to the stock: and in October the stock throws out roots," The article contains another mention of a similar method using something called "tan".

The article also mentions that grafting can be done in April with "perfect success".

If someone can advise what "tan" is please advise. I believe that it is crushed rock but I can not locate my english gardening book.

Hi, Thanks! I am a beginner and on the lookout too. So far none have shown up at our local Costco. The manager had no idea when they would be arriving or whether they would even order them this year. Haven't got a chance to check out the other stores yet. It would be great if we set up an alert system here on the forum- if anyone sees them at their local stores, either Lowes, Walmart, Home Depot etc. to post an alert here. Wow, The plants had instructions but the root stalk (looked just like a 4" piece of ginger root) was about 4" long so I wasn't sure if the bottom of the root stalk was supposed to be 4" underground or the top. Can you tell if those roots are from the upper graft - meaning the part that they are supposed to be from? Thanks

Many of the tree peonies are grafted onto herbaceous peony rootstock. You are apparently seeing the rootstock sending up shoots. It's usually recommended to plant tree peonies deeply in order to get the graft point at least 6" below the soil. That way over time, the top grafted part can develop its own roots. I would recommend removing any sucker blooms coming from the roots so that the energy can go towards the top grafted portion. You may want to check along the woody stem to see if you can see the graft and if it is visible, consider replanting deeper in the fall.

I would dig it up this fall and replant it so the graft was about four inches under the soil which should keep the herbaceous rootstock from growing shoots. Al
