I adore the Gulf Fritillary butterflies! My neighbors had 2 passion vines on the wood lattice topper on our shared wall. Both ornamental, no fruit. One was the classic purple flower and the other was a red flower that was more bell shaped and produced nectar that meant it was always full of ants. Well we always saw butterflies flitting about but never caterpillars. I think the ants ate them as soon as they hatched. Well the lattice was rotten and new neighbors moved in who sweetly asked if it was OK to remove it. We were more than happy since we wanted to replace wood with steel topper. But then I seriously missed the butterflies. I saw zero for a year. I missed them so much I planted a passion vine on the shared wall of the other neighbors. Just the purple flower that doesn’t have nectar so it won’t attract ants. Well for the first time in a year, I see not only butterflies but larva! I plan to cut it back to the “trunk“ each winter so it doesn’t get out of control this time. This vine is incredibly vigorous and could completely cover a carport if you let it. I don’t care about the flowers which are always there or the look of the vine, which is always green with chew holes, but my heart sings when every day I sit in the patio surrounded by the fluttering of beautiful amber butterflies. Usually 2 or 3 but sometimes 7 or 8 as I also provide nectar flowers for them. For me, the whole point of the vine is the butterflies.

That's a type of scale. Are you by any chance in CA? I'm asking because I'd never seen that variety until I received an infested cutting from someone in CA. They are difficult to eradicate and can eventually kill your vines. Pick off what you can see. Unfortunately the adults aren't susceptible to most (if not all) topical insecticides because of their protective shell. The immature scale is mobile and susceptible to insecticides. It might be possible to smother the adults with a horticultural oil, not sure. They will also easily spread to nearby plants. My infestation was on container plants that weren't that big and I was able to remove them manually over the course of a couple months. Hopefully someone will be able to suggest a solution for the problem.

did you put root horomone on them first?? then in the soil?? i have rooted in both. but i like the soil, then filtered light and misted. same with confederate jasmine if i was to give it a try. i'd also use stay green aqua control soil. don't know why but for me that stuff is awesome!! ~Medo

HI,

After several great seasons with my passion flower vine here in SE PA, including a frittilary laying its egg and us nurturing it to chrysalis and then butterfly, my vine did not return this spring.

Any chance you still have some vine?

I have some wild hyacinth bean seeds that I'd like to trade for the passion flowers. These are effortless vines that are producing beautiful purple flowers right now. I'm in z8 and would really like some of passion flowers. I've been told that I need to plant the pods of the passion flower vines, as I didn't have good luck in transplanting a passion flower vine found at our barn. Would you send the pods or vine?
