I am pretty certain that no crossing has occured. Simply because it should not be technically possible to make a cross between a baccatum and another species.. So my guess is that you are growing some kind of baccatum, likely Hot Lemon plants... Down and others, re the spelling of Gary'O Sena, I meant to say "apostrophe" and not "hyphen", but you probably already figured that out. On this JD's Special C-Tex *Pink*, I'm not sure whether this was a mutation or a cross (or maybe even an instability), but I tend to think cross. Shouldn't a true mutation be stable? In any case, saved seeds from it seem to be unstable for at least some. Not sure how saved seeds turned out for *everyone*, but an attendee at SETTFest got a avg tasting (at best, imo), roundish med red. I don't know everything there is to know about JD's Special C-Tex and have only grown it a couple of times, but what is pretty much known is that it was the result of a cross made and stabilized by a Texas grower (JD Whittaker). Also, transplants have been sold for several years in the South Texas/Houston area at a few of the better nurseries, but can occasionally be hard to find. So, this variety has been around for a while. A topic that comes up every spring (for the last 3 years, at least) on the Texas forum here is folks asking if anyone has managed to locate JD's transplants yet. The actual parental inputs involved might be a little more uncertain. My understanding is that Brandywine as one of the parents is pretty much known, but what the black was might not be so clear. Some have suggested CP might be the dark, but I don't think so based on the size and shape of JD's. JD's is usually a little smaller than BW or CP, and tends to be more round than either of those vars. When I asked Darrel/fusion about this a while back, he also felt that a smaller, more globe-like dark (than CP) was probably used. Among fellow tomato nerds, Darrel has been growing this variety longer than anyone I know of except for perhaps Jay/brazos. Plus, he knows a little more about tomato genetics than I do, which is why I had originally asked his opinion on what the cross might have been. More: (1) JD's Special C-Tex = JD's Special C-Tex Early Black, as far as I know, and (2) there was also another cross done by JD, which was sold as a red hybrid (F1, not stabilized) called C-Tex Southern Heat Set. For whatever reason, this red one has not caught on nearly as much, could be taste or maybe because it was a hybrid (dunno).

WHICH WAY TO THE MILKY WAY? by Sidney Rossen

It is daytime fragrant; the warmer the room, the more bold the scent. I'm so pleased with this plant. I hope the plant will be as robust a grower as a Chocolate Starburst that blooms reliably at this time every year. It's a chocolate drop cross with B nodosa, I think.
