My First Cattleya Bloom!

My husband and I are young and just newbies to orchids. We love them but have only been into them for about a year. In the past year, we've acquired 20, most of them rehab plants from box stores. So far so good. I am VERY excited to have my first ever cattleya bloom!!

Reines has bloomed! :) It smells so wonderful! Ingrid, I have 2 antiques and then an Easy Does It, Strike it Rich, 2 knock outs and a tea rose. First year they're all in the ground so it's taking longer for them to bloom but so much fun coming home each day and seeing what treat my garden has in store. :)

The answer depends on whether your orchid normally blooms in Autumn or Winter or Spring. The sheath may go grey and appear dead while the plant waits for the appropriate time to flower. No peeking because you may damage the developing buds. Normal growth pattern where your conditions simulate a bit of winter is for the plant to "rest" during winter and start to grow new pseudobulbs in spring.

Aw, thanks for the welcome. I can't wait to post more pictures, once I get more blooms. I really enjoy seeing everyone's beautiful flowers. Since I am a newbie to daylilies, this year I stuck to buying older, inexpensive varieties - so I hope that I don't bore anyone with my obscure flowers. It is just such a pleasure to find people who "get it" and can appreciate my flower obsession. My garden is planted in a community garden, and the vast majority of people plant only vegetables/herbs. I know that some of them think I am crazy for planting only flowers, but I tell them that I help to attract tons of bees and butterflies to pollinate their crops!

Congratulations! I hope your first will not be your last and welcome to the forum. This is one of the nicest forums on the internet except me and Arthur from Australia arguing. I think you are very brave to start with such a challenge.You will not succeed with all of them but there are a lot of guys here to help....

Thanks ifraser25! We shall see how this whole orchid addiction goes! We are in a 2 bedroom apartment on the third floor with no balcony and potted plants jam packed in every window. I cannot imagine how the addiction will grow when we get a house!
