Free plants from Mike

Several years ago, some of the members of this group were lucky enough to receive some free plants from one of the members of this group in the Northwest that had rescued them from a well known nursery that was being demolished. I was wondering if anyone that had received any of the plants had photos of these same plants, in or out of bloom, to show their success with these rescues. I have 2 plants that have survived since then, zygopetalums, that are growing but havent bloomed as of yet. The plants were seedlings when i received them so iam not that concerned that they havent bloomed as of yet. I dont have a camera to share any photos by the way.How about it, anybody want to show their successes? If youre out there Mike, thanks again for your efforts!

Mike AKA Persistence was banned from this forum a couple of years ago. I haven't heard from him in ages. I hope he hasn't dropped off the face of the earth..

I think it's ashame Mike was banned...I don't know what he did, but he should have been forgiven. He did more good than bad I'm sure. With new owners of this site,he probably could come back......but I don't know how it works.The plants he sent me were frozen because he didn't wrap them or portect them in any way. I do have a plant from there I got in trade and it's coming along. ~Charm

At one house, I nabbed some bags of what I thought were leaves (We have chickens, and a good way to keep the run from stinking is to dump leaves and other organic stuff on top. It rots down and never seems to get any higher . . . ) and upon dumping it into the run, to the surprise of me and the chickens I found I had three huge bags of cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior). I had no desire for any of it, so I put it up for grabs on Craigslist. Man was it popular. I had to dole it out but no one complained about getting a full grocery bag of the stuff. I'm bored to death with it so I was rather surprised at all the people, some who drove twenty miles to get it (They called and asked, and then drove knowing full well what they were getting when they arrived). I have also gotten african irises. Here and there someone tosses in dog poop or beer cans, but hey, that is the luck of the draw when you are curb snatching.

It is quite pretty, especially in flower, fairly easy to pull and it is not aggressive in the sense that it doesn't produce runners or underground roots like bindweed etc. But it does self seed prolifically. So best to remove it as you have done, unless you enjoy weeding. In my garden G robertianum and Corydalis lutea are about the same level of nuisance. ie tolerable.

Oh Rhizo - yep, clear as mud now LOL! Actually, I decided to repot the Limequat anyway and fount that the root stock had indeed sent out roots above the original root flare, so now I'm really confused. Add to that when I started to tease the roots our of the original pot bound shape, I discovered that it had probably been planted in peat or coir or some other fiberous mass and it was sodden in the middle. I did not see any signs of rot (am I under a lucky star or what?) so I just carefully removed as much of the soggy mess that I could and reset it in a loose sandy mix. We'll see if I killed it or not - but I'm sure it wouldn't have been happy for much longer in the existing conditions. I ended up setting it so that the new roots above the flare are right at the soils line, are there any thoughts that I should root prune those and set the tree even higher? You can see the soil line was about 2 inches up the trunk from where it is now. Pics for those who are interested: And BONUS! My Meyer Lemon graced me with the first two blooms of the season :-) It has been in a holding pattern all winter! And just to show that spring has come early to eastern PA - Hellebores have been blooming since the first of Feb And their seeds have sprouted under the priimroses Sorry for going off topic, but it was 70 here today and I jsut can't help myself Alexa

You are probably going to have to wait intil spring to mail them. What I often do is wash most of the soil off the roots, wrap the root in a wet paper towel, and fold a damp one around the leaves, put it in a baggie, and then a paper towel or toilet paper roll for protection. Then use bubble wrap and mail. It seems to work best if you mail it on a Monday so it has a chance to get there within the week. And by the way I would love to have one of these in the spring. Anne

Yes, i know some of the plants were damaged in transit due to the cold, i think it was January when most of them were shipped. Maybe if Mike sees the concern of other folks that "Knew him when" he may attempt to return. Although iam grateful to Mike, and would like to see him return also, i'd REALLY like the focus of this post to be the plants he was so good to save and then distribute to the Forum mmebers.

I give him a lot of credit (curses?) for getting me into species orchids. Not just with the free plants but also the photos he used to post here.

I still have two of the rescue plants, both of which have bloomed and are doing well.

I'm still mad at the post office for all the ones that died.

Thanks to everyone that replied to my post, i had hoped to see some more photos of some of these free plants, but i guess there arent any more to share! Thanks again, Happy New Year! Bob

I still ahve 2 of about 7 plants I received. I think those two are getting close to flowering size. The others were paphs I just gave away this past fall since I no longer have an interest in them.

One of my remaining plants is a Tainia sessilifolia and from what I've been able to determine it's very rare in the orchid world. You guys will be first to see it when it blooms. If my house caught fire, that plant would be the first thing I grabbed on my way out the door.

Hi all,
I still have several of of Mike's free plants. One of them is blooming now for the first time! (it blasted the past two years...) I'll try to remember to post photos later...

Yes, yes I am. It hasn't been that way for a long time though so we shall see how it does. I think the reservoir needs to be deeper.
