They will get mature heads of from 4' to 10'. Pick an average of around 8' in diameter. If you want them to touch, plant them 8' apart. Closer than that and you have fronds banging into each other. If you want them for shade value, then put them closer. I would price out fully-booted ones just out of curiosity. They do look better than the clear trunks unless you plan on growing stuff on the trunks. I did a job in Ft. Lauderdale where we tied staghorn ferns all around the clear trunks of five existing Sabals on the property. That was 7 or 8 years ago. I would imagine by now they have fully wrapped themselves and expanded.

You may want to mention where the trees are. You know, city and state at least.

The first palm tree looks more like a Phoenix Dactylifera to me ( i have 6 dif. date palms in a good size and it just looks a little more like a dacty. to me.) the second is a Yucca Rostrata and i would say a Washingtonia Filiferia because your in Cali... just like the huge trunk pictured is a filiferia so i would guess that little one is also... very nice palms tho -Justin in Vb

Good grief! This story by itself, to hear about these stately old palms disappearing, is sad enough. Any living plant produces oxygen, and therefore is a benefit to the enviroment, with the exception for any poisonous and/or invasive species. Funny they would mention pollution......why don't they try to eliminate that first? Get some of those ultra-rich stars to get rid of their big gas-guzzling SUV's and limousines. Bring back cable cars and more mass transportation. Folks like Jay Leno would have a heart attack.....he owns more than 80 cars (most of them old classics) and even an old fire truck. Hey.....there's an idea. Get rid of all those old antique cars people drive. Never mind that they're valuable and pretty to look at it (just like the old palms), they're not doing anything "beneficial" for the enviroment... ; (
