Well I guess I shall see! I moved a few Munstead around too last spring but just going into their 2nd year. They all survived and even bloomed. The cutting are rooting so if it survives I'll have 5 plants if not 4 will do LOL! Vera

Hi Jen, Sounds like you've been busy and I hope things slow down for you soon so you can relaaaaxxxx. :O) First, make sure it's OK for you to take those plants off the property you are moving from. It's like selling a house - if the plants are not in the contract and you take them, there could be repercussions. When I sold my house in 2001, I made sure that the fact that I was taking some of the plants with me was in the contract. Secondly, if the Bachelor Buttons (Centaurea Montana) and Poppies are perennials, then you should be able to transplant all of your plants, but I would do it ASAP as time is starting to run out on fall transplanting. I'm still doing it here, but it's getting 'iffy'. Make sure you water well so the roots get established and when things turn cold, give them a good mulching to keep them set in case of heaving during the winter. FYI, I just moved over a dozen 3 year old winter sown Oriental Poppies today in my gardens. They might pout for a year but something tells me they won't and I'll see them flowering in June of next year. :O)

Use a whole 10litre can. Pour it in slowly, so the water doesn't just run along the surface. Then wait for at least a week before watering again. How to tell when it needs watering: quite right, browning leaves is a sign that there is something amiss in the root zone. Take a lavender leaf and bend it slightly. It should be pliable, even slightly plasticky. The aromatic oils it contains will come off on your fingers because the stomata will be open. When they are thirsty, the leaves will look the same but be brittle, even crispy, with none of the pliancy of a well-irrigated plan and the oils will be less apparent, being locked in the plant as it tries to conserve water. This is my own, highly unscientific method of assessing the watering needs of those sticky, tricky, mediterraneans such as santolina, rosemary, thymes and lavenders.

Hi, I am glad I posted this question because from your helpful remarks yes I have decided to leave Shaina where it happily is, and obtain a new one (or other) in spring. The main reason for desire to move is that I did not site it well. The site seems good for growth and health of tree, but not great location from main viewing point of patio. I was going to move it to a more visible location and one with more sun to aid fall color. Unfortunately, among the two local nurseries that carry JMs (and one has a moderately extensive stock list), neither accepts ordering. So I am left with mail order, or 'wait and see what they got' come spring. Ken, I don't mean to bring this post off track but do ask for one follow up. You mention Coniferkingdom - I am familiar with this site but not from any order experience. I have only mail ordered JM one time a few years ago (Davidsansjapanesemaples; two Winter Flame; cultivar selection in fact aided by gardengal. I was very pleased with purchase). Do you recommend Coniferkingdom? Thanks for your help. I am grateful kind and more experienced folk are willing to share their experience in these forums.
