Breakfast and Plant Shopping!

Howdy!

So....Saturday, May 3rd. Interested in plant shopping?

Leaving my place in Lancaster at 8 am and hitting Shady Maple Smorgasbord for 200' of breakfast buffet! My dad works there and they have awesome breakfast food.

Then on to Black Creek Greenhouse. It's a HUGE place owned and run by one family in Narvon/East Earl area. They have great prices and have Perennials, Annuals, Herbs, Tropicals, Water Gardening, Veggies, Fruit plants, hard goods, and really unusual stuff.

Then on to Mrs. Martins amazing nursery...right down the road. She's got awesome stuff and it's fun to walk around with her and listen to her infinite plant wisdom!

There are a bunch of places along the way as well...Zimmermans, Basket Warehouse..etc.

Hi David----My daughter lives in Lancaster and I know what you mean about Shady Maple.

Lancaster is a lovely area----I love the ride down 23 from Shady Maple to Lancaster especially when the fields have a dusting of snow.

david, sounds like a fun day. i love those smorgasbord type restaurants and i've purchased many a basket from the warehouse.

Well I'm jealous too. First of all that ya'll both have plenty of money and time to go shopping for plants and have lunch. LOL It is so awesome to spend time with another plant person. They understand us and our desire to have more plants. I just love spending time in the gardens with others. I rarely can find time to do anything besides pull weeds, dig holes, move rocks, take cuttings, mow, rake, hoe, harvest seeds, food and so forth and let's not even talk about how dirty my hands get. I was thinking the other day about doing my nails and got tickled at even thinking about it for a split second. That polish would last about 1 minute before I had my hand in something without a glove on it. (grin) I'm going to start a post and list the brugs that I have growing right now. For those of you who have shared with me I'll share with you. Just let me know which ones you want and I'll keep a list. When they are big enough, I'll take cuttings. I lost alot of cuttings that people either gave me or I bought of ebay or somewhere else. (frown) Eloise I'm glad you got to spend some time with Gloria. I know Ya'll hit it off just great. Probably like two peas in a pod. Hey, Doesn't Josh live close to ya'll? If so, he probably would have liked to show up shop, and visit with you two also. Happy Gardening, Marian

Stupice is a truly great variety since you get ripe tomatoes the middle of July, small (though bigger than cherry toms) and lots of flavor. And they just keep on producing until frost. Did you try Kellogg's Breakfast? - that is another super good tomato.

a successful weekend!..9 clearance plants from Lowe's..just a little over $10..4 hosta..a bleeding heart..a coleus..a bush daisy with fern like foliage (never had one)..2 small yellow spotted crotons were just 50 cents each..the coleus and daisy are just for the rest of the summer but 7 of them should last awhile..5 perennials and 2 houseplants..

agree with them.. but 2 further thoughts ... if you buy potted plants ... now might not be the best time to be planting... you would probably be better off 'holding them over' until a better planting time in fall ... also ... the plant culture variables are key ... and 'plenty hot and sunny' .. is but 2 of them ... when perfecting this.. you need to take them all into account .. e.g. a plant needs a fully established root mass to pump enough water to offset high heat ... you cant... or shouldnt transplant in heat .. disturb the roots ability to pump water ... and then hope the plant shows no stress ... ergo.. you plant when it cools off ... now is a great time to be thinking about this.. and planning.. but not really the time for action ... ken

Done the same route, but ate at SM for lunch
My stops are Martins Greenhouse 5489 Division HWY
Narvon, PA 17555 - Great place for unsual perennials, then Sauders 1210 E Earl Rd, East Earl - lots of shrubs, conifers and perennials ( good prices) Conestoga Nursery, 310 Reqding Rd, East Earl( more great trees and shrubs also nice perennials, as you metioned Black Creek 211 E Black Creek Rd, East Earl PA, on the way back home - Hoovers Farm Market 30 Erb's Bridge Road Lititz(geat annuals) and I am sure that there are plenty of other places that I have not found yet.

Mike....I love Mrs. Martins place. I got some awesome Poppies there one year and she has great stuff in that one hoop house with the huge rose bush in it.

I always try to hit that on the way back.

Conestoga nursery is good as well for basic shrubs and trees.

I have been to all the places that you have mentioned except for Martins Greenhouse. Where is it? Going East on 322/Division Hwy, is it before or after Blue Ball?
I live fairly close to Hoovers and I go there often. I love the fact that I can buy fresh produce when buying my annuals.

Mike, do you know the address? All I know is that there used to be a Purple house across the street until the owners repainted.

If you are coming down into Blue Ball, stay on the 322 side and it's a mile or so on the right?

I am not from the area only know how to get there from memory. Check out the link below. I remember there is a small sign - it is on the right side of 322, and you pull into her stone drive/parking lot, just in front of the barn.
Later in spring is better, as she is getting more of her plants out and on display.
