After 4-5 Years, my Stan. Finally Bloomed!

After being away for almost a week, I retuned to find my Stan. still in bud! This was at 5:00 p.m. This morning I checked at 6:00 and found it still in bud. By 9:00 a.m., it was in full bloom. It has a mint/citrus fragrance.

This is my first and only Stan. I love it!

Hey congrats! Nicely done! Do you know what the secret was? I've had S. inodora from EOoM since about 2003. It is WAY big enough to have bloomed, but never has. :(

I think someone posted last year one blooming with only one or two growths. Mine must have 20 or more...but no spikes. I'm seriously thinking about throwing it out the back for the squirrels to chew on. It is way too big and annoying to keep if it won't bloom, IMO. tia

Last year, my bulbs were in lawless conditions. I bought a children pool and put them in it in their pots. It was easier to water them this way. I just poured the water in and they all got some. But then some rains came and completely drenched the bulbs. They were neck up to the water and they stayed that way for a long time by the time I noticed it and let the water away. So I ended up with most of the bulbs shrunk to tiny bulblets that I didn't think would even survive. Then I had to move to the new house, so I unpotted them, cut the leaves and put them in the new wine cooler I bought for this purpose to make sure that the bulbs do not freeze down. A month later I noticed that the wine cooler froze down and even killed about 10 bulbs. I returned it to the store and just bought a huge standing fridge that had the freezer part separately. I kept my bulbs in that fridge. Then I planted them up from Summer, hoping that they would still come back to me. And to my amazement: More than 50 percent FLOWERED! They shrunk, they were sitting in water, they froze down, they were in dormancy for a half a year or LONGER, and they BLOOMED! I am still floored by some of them. Now, they are out in the flower bed, fattening up. I hope they enjoy the situation. So you see, once they want to bloom, they just bloom, even if they kill themselves.

Congragulations! Looks healthy. It will probably take about 3-4 months before the fruit ripens, but its worth the wait!

Dinglehopp, I strongly suggest you email Pamela. Like I said, I don't remember now how I came up with her name, but she didn't have a Boule de Neige listed as being available. I just asked--do you by any chance have one? She answered that she had a small one going and thought she could send it to me in the later fall (I was writing in the early fall). I explained that in Kansas, we waited until spring to plant our new roses, and she wrote back that was even better and she could promise a good-sized one for sure for April. So that was all arranged through our emails--it was not part of a regular online order. Good luck! Kate

Mr. Breeze, give it light, light, and more light. I put it under HP light (but gradually, as the thin leaves burn), and within 2-3 weeks a spike formed.
It's got a huge scale problem, but I want to wait til the blooms fade (which won't be long) before I kill the blasted critters. I also want to take another photo, as the colour is not correct. (Poor lighting and new camera ).

I think it is a wardii, like Sharon 's. It was just listed 'species' Stan. on the label.

Snowpea, I went to the Montreal Orchid Show too! Have taken pics but will need time to post them.
