Dendrobium Aussie Hero x speciosum Windermere

The only hybrid Dend I still own. IÂve been waiting so long for this one to bloom, I thought I had to resign myself to a foliage plant forever. It surprised me. 1 inch flowers with an incredible, sweet, clean fragrance. I think it may rival B. nodosa in the "I think I just died and went to heaven" category. Small grower too Â only about 6 inches tall.

According to my notes:

Aussie Hero = 37.5% kingianum, 25% jonesii, 25% fleckeri, 12.5% falcorostrum

I believe Arthur provided that bit of info years ago when I was wondering how in the heck to bloom this thing.

Beautiful - love these off-white fragrant minis. Too bad I suck at australian dends :(

First of all, the correct name is Avril's Gold, my usual lousy spelling. Yes, there is substance to the flowers. Much more so than any speciosum I have. Don't know which of the plants in the background are responsible for this. A very expensive plant, medium sized unbloomed plants sell for $150 to $200 at SBOE. I bought it cheap as an unbloomed small Dend speciosum in 1997 When it bloomed for the first time in June of 2,000, David Banks from Australia was our guest speaker. He identified it as an Avril's Gold, award quality. I never took it for judging as it dribbles it's bloom over 6 month rather than give a flush of color. Nick

Nick, An impressive bunch of pictures. Dare I say some of the most impressive you have offered! At least in my eye. Since I've joined this forum I have found the Speciousums, acquired 3, including one hillii received in trade from you that will provide me my first speciousum flowers. This species and its hybrids are becoming my favorites. My hillii has 6 young and healthy spikes. I'm doing my best to be patient. Thanks.

That`s their only flaw, the flowers last about 12-14 days. And, at least for me, they just bloom once a year. I remember other people saying on this forum that Den. Hilda Poxon blooms more once for them. Hilda is the only one out of the six that I initially bought early last year that did not bloom now. It tried to but aborted the spike at an early stage. I favor plants that are pleasant to look at without being in bloom (since that is what you see most of the year) and these definitely fit that description.

Kevin, that is gorgeous! Congratulations on blooming it! These are the type dends that OrchidNick grows and is ordering more of right now. I was sorely tempted, but don't think there's any way I could bloom them. I couldn't resist the sarcos though and hope I can keep them alive and eventually bloom them. Again, beautiful blooms.

Thanks guys.

Chryss - I'm not really sure what I did to get flowers. I did keep it pretty cool last winter, lots of light and also decided not to water until I saw new growth, so it did sit there very dry for a good number of months.
