Corn Gluten pellets cheaper than Soy Bean Meal

Greetings,

Where I live, Corn Gluten pellets are cheaper than Soy Bean meal, even though I do not see any label on the CGP bag. I buy it from local feed store. In this case, can I use CGP as fertilizer all through the year instead of SBM, since CGP has more nitrogen content. Any help is appreciated.

CGP or CGM are the same thing, the only draw back I see with the CGP is that it may take longer to break down then the meal form.

I am trying to find out if I can use CGM all through the year as fertilizer instead of Soy bean meal. For me, Soy bean meal is more expensive than CGM.

Darn! I've used the pellets with success for a long time, and the meal in desperation when the pellets couldn't be found, but never noticed fire ants! Maybe it's my Zone - hot, windy, 4-seasons, etc. Molasses? What a waste, eh!

I just called a bunch of stores, and here are the results. The store mentioned by Greg is called "Cumming, Suwanee Feed & Supply" on 2730 Spot Rd, 30040 - 770-887-5200. I just called them and they only carry corn gluten meal during the Spring. Nature Turf's phone (770) 475-5104 has been disconnected. www.natureturf.com gives me an error message. I guess they went out of business? These stores do carry corn gluten meal, but it's the expensive type that is labeled for weed control. 1. Pike's - $30 for 25 lbs 2. Standard Feed and Seed (on Brannen) - $37 for 25 lbs. These stores do not carry corn gluten meal. Maybe it is a seasonal issue. 1. Cooper Seeds 2. Backyard Feed and Seed 3. North Fulton Feed and Seed 4. My local Ace store. I found this interesting website that lists feed stores for horses. You would think that horse owners would buy the cheaper version and not the bags that are labeled for weed control. And don't horses eat all year round? Ludwig's at 131st and Bell Rd. in Lemont (630)257-3097; has everything you need, except corn meal. You will not find corn meal in Northern Illinois unless you're willing to purchase it by the pallet from J.R.Short Milling in Kankakee, but it's going to cost you $400+ and you'll be buying 2500 lbs. You'll also need to set up a business account. Cracked corn is an alternative and I believe Ludwig's carries that but you'll need to ask them. Tri-County Stockdale is only good for feed, not the grains. They do have bone meal and blood meal but those are specialty items for our purpose and shouldn't be used unless you know you have a calcium deficiency or are applying to bare soil in preperation for planting. For a good source of calcium use CGM on a regular basis and that will amend any issues there. Also Schaefer's Fish Fertilizer has a LOT of calcium. Sure it is ok to use all season long another alternative is Alfalfa Meal, but not if you plan on reseeding in the fall because CGM or CGP has the side effect of being a pre-emergent and it will prevent your grasslings from sprouting. How much of a price difference is there between SBM and the CGP, how much were you quoted for the 2 meals?

I can get CG pellets 50lb bag for $6 and Soybean meal 50 lb bag for $13. I don't foresee reseeding as I have bermuda and zoysia.

I'm so jealous. CGM/P is so much more expensive here than soybean!

I would check to see what % CGM is used in the pellets. If it's mostly filler you may see a decrease in protein compared to the more expensive SBM. The CGM I buy I think I remember it being 60 or 80%, can't recall exactly off hand.
