Comments (3)Both will come back from down low. Common "Apple blossom" is actually 'Donard Seedling'. Real 'Apple blossom' like Pink Princess = 'Frades' but pink-and-white instead of all pink. Have only seen that at local arboretum, where it froze down and is probably no longer present....See Moredid my knockout roses die due to the harsh winter?
Comments (11)Hi Annececilia and Michaela, It is so good and encouraging to know that these roses may still be growing (and they are definitely not dead). Similar to you, I have cut off all the dead canes last weekend. I will feed them today and keep them appropriately watered (not an issue with our spring weather so far this year). Hopefully new growth will continue. My two pink double knockouts (in a different part of the property) are doing fine and there are good new growth already. I probably will not plant new and tall annuals right next to them so the roses can receive good sun light and nutrients. I am thinking using a couple of pots strategically placed to create some colors needed for the garden while not create competition for the roses. Thanks for the information and now I am much more hopeful! Vivian...See MoreRelatively complicated ? about ES size, die back, flower color
Comments (4)mehearty, my ES are now 3 years old. They were bought as 2-3 gallon plants then. They are now each about 4' wide and tall. My friends have similar ES that they planted the year after mine, and they are in a similar geographical location (several blocks away) but theirs are no where near the size of mine! I guess I have a location that has morning sun and is pretty protected from the wintry elements. The wood did not completely die back even during the zone 5 winter here and they always come back a good size! Anyway, I guess my point is, it's quite unpredictable how large your ES will get. I guess it depends on whether you have a good location or not, with protection from the elements etc. BTW, I really did baby mine during the first 2 years, watering them deeply daily. I guess that did help to establish a strong root system so they have grown well....See Moreescallonia
Comments (6)I know how you feel about the escallonias. I'm pretty sure I lost 9 out of 10 escallonias that I have in my garden. I "think" one may have survived because it did not lose ALL it's leaves and I see a few buds on a very few branches. They are some of my favorites as they flower all summer long. Very sad. They are all around the circle turnaround in front of my house and several along the stone steps coming up to my back patio. I haven't dug them up yet, because I am still hoping, but I'm not very optimistic. On the other hand, the 6 abelias that I thought were dead have started showing life on the lower branches!! I cut them pretty far back this weekend to where the buds start and I think they are going to make it! Yea!! I did lose 2 Viburnum tinus. They were soft and wet and seemed rotten down to the base of the plant. From now on I'm replacing all of them with very cold hardy plants at least down to Zone 6. I think I'll replace the Escallonias with Spireas. There are so many different varieties and they flower all summer and are very hardy....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
