Sunday possibly our worst day so far

In response to all of Dawn's warnings. Yesterday morning a NWS forecaster on a local radio station said that depending how a wind shear situation developed Sunday could be the worst day so far this year. The NWS site doesn't show what he was saying yet. They are saying 28-30 with gusts around 40. He said he saw a possibility of sustained winds in the 30-40 mph range and gusts 60 approaching 70 if certain conditions develop. Hopefully they don't. I hope at least some on this forum receive rain. Two sites are showing we have some chances in the next 7-10 days but the NWS doesn't show anything. It is very serious here now. It is calm now. I'm heading out to do some work on the greenhouse now. Hope everyone has a good and safe weekend. Jay

With what we are seeing today. Unless things have changed the forecaster said today would be mild compared to tomorrow. We are seeing 25-35 mph winds with gusts up to 47. Limits what it is safe to do. Going to plant some more. May start slipping a few plants in the ground next week. May have to buy some as most of mine are still small. Will sure have to give them some windbreak or they will never survive. Jay

Jay, Mine aren't very big either, but I started putting them in the ground. They will grow in the ground faster than in that pot. LOL

I'm glad to read all these reports; they're interesting! Thanks to everyone who's written in. Rosemeadowgardener: I don't recognize any of the weeds you list; are they Australian natives, or exotic: do you know their botanical names? Thank God we don't have one of the worst curses of North America here: no poison ivy, oak, sumac. How interesting to read Marianne's weed list from the other end of the European temperate zone and discover that I have all the nasty weeds she does, and several of the nice ones. Galium aperine is an unpleasant plant, sticky and climbing, but there are a number of other Galium species that grow locally that are rather nice. Sweet woodruff is Galium odoratum. Our native primrose is Primula vulgaris; and we too have anemones, hepaticas, wild geraniums--harebells I think not. Connie speaks of the huge weed population of her property, which is an old farm. We too garden on a former farm and downhill from a current one, and I agree with what her post suggests, that agricultural properties present particular weed problems. Ongoing plowing leaves ground permanently disturbed, given weeds fertile ground to grow; grazing animals can trample ground, and the hay brought in to feed them can bring weed seeds from other areas. The year after the shade garden was flooded with manure from a cattle enclosure above, the weed population there was amazing. And we get great numbers of weeds, some of them highly obnoxious, along the drainage ditches that descend from our neighbors' plowed fields through our own land. Then, if fields and pastures are abandoned, they begin to go to brush, and you get brambles and other colonizing species--Connie's plant list is different from mine, but the process is the same. What the heck is Creeping Charlie? A couple of you have mentioned it. The various posts have covered quite a bit of territory, not only in the literal sense, on the topic of weeds. Paula took up the issue of invasive exotics that push out native species on undomesticated land (as well as the native but obnoxious Poison Oak). This is a problem all over the world, of course. I read in that interesting book 'Ecological Imperialism' about how many plants flourished in Europe along with the development of agriculture and became weeds, then traveled all over the world with European colonizers and established themselves in temperate zones everywhere, often at considerable cost to native species. We too have our exotic invasive species--one standout here in the hills is black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia, originally from North America--but I wonder what the effect has been on our native flora of a few thousand years of tolerably intensive agriculture. Were there species that went extinct because they were useless to humans and occupied land that could be used for farming and other useful activities? Some plant populations exist in part as a result of human activities: we have a rich population of native orchids many of which grow in pasture land and are now threatened because grazing is disappearing and the land is turning to brushland and then to woods. But perhaps three thousand years ago the orchids that grew were those adapted to woodlands? Lavender lass: do you know the species name of your artemisia? We have one ugly native artemisia, A. vulgaris, but a couple of nice ones. Another pleasant weed I remembered is lemon balm, Melissa officinalis--what a fine plant to share a name with. It's too invasive to plant, but grows wild at the edges of beds, is fragrant, and has fresh green leaves that are pretty in spring. I feel better every time I see it. I like mulleins too. We have a woolly species similar to what erasmus describes which makes a fine ornamental; the problem is that it seems to need a somewhat lighter soil than is present in most of our garden; otherwise it's not fussy. I have some palms that i am trying out in protected locations, but no actual protection otherwise. Most are marginal here, but readily available at garden centers. Our microclimates are so complex here. Someone on the other side of town might be able to grow something that you have trouble with. Our low this winter was 29F for a bit before sunrise one day. We had a dozen or so frosty mornings and other than that we stayed around 35F. Majesty palm - outer half of fronds damaged, but already has 3 spears as of today and one opening up Foxtail- less hardy than supposed. Four large fronds completely fried, but opening a spear. I moved it to a more protected location with two-story walls on three sides and facing south. Dypsis Decipiens (manambe palm) - seedling, unprotected out in the open - no damage. Kentia Palm - No damage Flame Thrower- No damage King - slight damage I also have these, although these are given in our area: 6 Queens Phoenix Canariensis W. Robusta

Marcy, thank you for thinking of my poor plants. I'm almost to the point that herbicide is the only logical option, but I'm still having a problem with it. Would it not affect my cucumbers or squash at all or at a different rate? I haven't lost one of those so far (knock on wood really hard!). Dawn, thank you but this is only the second time I have had a garden. I just spend many hours reading up and researching. This and the other forums have helped me immensely. I have been going crazy all weekend. 11 plants gone and about 6 more wilted. I took a limb to work today and had some of the guys look at it. We dissected it and looked under a (weak) microscope. Everything in the vascular system looked good, except the pith was kind of hollow and white and webby looking. I will cut open a healthy one tomorrow to see how it looks and compare the two. Plus I plan on going to the extension office and possibly contacting a local master gardener that the other rangers have recommended. To answer your questions: No walnut trees anywhere near. I learned about this in my field botany class. I tried explaining this to my dad, but since he is older and wiser, and his garden is doing fine, he thought I was mistaken. :) The others are wilting. Very random pattern, but I assume some varieties are more succeptable to the problem than others. It had been doing well at avoiding my hybrids, but I have a wilted beefmaster and big beef now. No one would have used a weed-n-feed near the garden. I wonder though, since the lady that owned this house before me was apparently obsessed with flowers and weeds (I pull up plastic weed blocker all the time, all over the place) what she might have sprayed or put in the ground. But, I'm stills stumped, because why would it take two months to kill the plant? It seems like every avenue I go just has something that doesn't add up. I really hope to get some answers tomorrow. you had a more productive day than i did, lol...i was bound and determined to get the laundry baskets empty! i'm down to the final load (just a slip-cover) with the upstairs bathroom re-do almost finished, dh can take his basket back upstairs and not get his stuff mixed with mine. i hate his dress shirts getting in general laundry...they're all wash and wear and if i'm quick and do them alone, i don't have to iron! we had about an inch of that fluffy snow but it was almost all gone by 3...we still quite a base from the 7" we had last week. my most important thing was calling ds2 and finding out what time they were headed to the hosp for induction tomorrow...9:30am, so if i do go out, it will be early. we're not going to hosp, as they've sort of closed it to everyone except patients. they're trying to prevent that 3rd outbreak of h1n1... while i'd love to be there, i can wait 48 hours til baby gets home. dil is sort of high maintance and it's better to be on her terms...so wish us luck that everything goes well...i'd hate to see her have to have a "c" section, unless baby needs it...he'll be our 8th grand and second boy...(their first)

I just looked at your weather on the Amarillo NWS webpage, and it looks pretty grim for y'all.

I hope you stay safe, and don't let that wind pick you up and carry you away like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz....unless you want to visit the Emerald City.

Tiger don't worry I will ask for rain for everyone.

Dawn what concerns me is if it is worse tomorrow like a few think it might be. Neither the Dodge City or Amarillo sites are predicting it as being as bad tomorrow as today. But others are saying they think it will be worse with gusts up to 70mph and sustained winds for a while around 40. Just hoping they are wrong.

I've been outside some. Hard to make myself stay out in the gale. Finished planting what potatoes I will plant this year. Going back out for a while. Jay

There have been some fires around today. Seems that some people don't think. A man that works for an irrigation company was using a cutting torch in an old corn field that will soon be replanted. The sparks started a fire that burned a few hundred acres before the local fire dept and a farm family that are good friends of ours got a fire guard plowed and got it stopped. It jumped two different bare areas of around 100ft wide each. It is hard to imagine anyone lighting a fire in winds like we've had today. I know the farmers are wanting to water and the companies need to make money but common sense needs to be the judge in this weather. Jay

Tigerdawn, I hope the Wizard is in the mood to freely disperse water everywhere in response to Jay's request.

Jay, I am concerned that the wind could be worse than forecast too. In April 2009 we were expecting wind, I think, gusting a little over 50 and it seems like some parts of the state had gusts over 60.

Also, in April 2009, we thought we were prepared, and then the fires were so much worse than anticipated. So, even if you think you're prepared, you know you're wondering "how much worse could it be than what I'm expecting?".

I just spent a few minutes reading the updates at the Texas Forest Service website and there have been multiple large fires started in Texas this week where the cutting of pipe was the cause. One thing Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas all share is that most of each state is in some form of drought and we face wicked fire danger tomorrow.

Texas' largest wildfire (nicknamed either the Aspermont Fire or the Swenson Fire) has been burning since Wednesday, has burnt between 61,000 and 71,000 acres, has 4 heads and is 0% contained. They're in trouble with that fire when tomorrow's fire weather peaks. I hope there aren't any small towns in its path (or, for that matter, large towns).

In Texas, the Texas Forest Service says that tomorrow's expected fire weather conditions are expected to be the WORST EVER in Texas history. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Dawn I will post what the NWS says for tomorrow. They have increased the wind speeds a little but are still lower than what we've seen today. Many of the other forecasters are still saying higher tomorrow than today. I just checked and we had steady winds of 30-35 with several gusts over 50 mph this afternoon. Think the highest I saw recorded was 53 mph. Jay

NWS forecast for tomorrow. Mostly sunny, with a high near 65. Very windy, with a west wind 18 to 21 mph increasing to between 29 and 32 mph. Winds could gust as high as 43 mph.

So, what ended up happening up there?

Very little happened in our part of OK, but I don't know about the rest of the state.

Texas burned like mad and I believe when they add up all the numbers, it will be over 100,000 new acres that burned this weekend, not counting what had burnt earlier in the week.

Our highest winds here were between midnight and maybe 5 or 6 a.m., leaving me to dread what was coming later in the day. Then, even though we stayed windy, the wind after sunrise was not nearly as bad as the overnight wind.

I think we got lucky here in OK.
