Danged global warming!!!!.....

It was 8 degrees here this morning! Yeah,I know,you all up nort' have it a lot worse,but it never gets this cold this early here. These temps are reserved for January. We need to put up a high wall between us and Canada! Lol! Phil

It was a balmy 12 here in the Philly 'burbs this morning.... LOL! Talk about a deep freeze!

Phil,

The weather works both ways. Up here on the east coast of Canada, it was 58 degrees F. yesterday with heavy rain and wind. We got this mess from you! It came up the eastern seaboard. In central Canada, they got buried in heavy snow that came up from the American midwest. Since everything is green and Octoberish here, today I'm going out to rake the leaves I missed earlier. Here's hoping that the hostas in pots don't rot from thawing.

I suppose it's more difficult for those without the space to grow an actual garden using the ground, but I have found that organic methods work much better where Mother Nature is more in control, and a more inorganic approach works well for the confined spaces of containers where we, the gardeners, are more in control. Even so, we do have more control over which fertilizers we choose, the water we use, the soil, etc... Science tells us that warmer water freezes faster than cold water... and I would not dump hot water on any of my plants. I generally use tepid, room temperature, un-softened water on my container grown plants. I would agree with Tapla... the basics are important to learn... and then comes the more involved knowledge as one gets used to the general ideas of growing in containers. I find that "Container Soils - Water Movement & Retention XVI" is a good place to begin reading... the thread has been bumped to the front page within this forum.

I will leave it up to the climate scientists to try and sort out the details of what's happening. But the fact that the atmospheric CO2 started at 280 ppm in pre-industrial times and has recently broken 400 ppm, and will keep rising due to anthropogenic causes, no doubt has some effect on climate. I am currently raising a Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) caterpillar inside my house - along with the Black swallowtails (P. polyxenes). Both of these species lay eggs on the rue growing in my veggie garden. Historically Massachusetts is part of the native range for the Blacks but not Giants, who are only starting to breed in this state in the past few years. The scientist theorize that their range is pushing northward due to warming climate.

Here in Florida, spider mites are more of a problem in the spring when it is very dry and starting to get hot. The rest of the year, I never see them. In fact, I usually don't see them in the spring unless I buy a new rose and introduce them into the garden. I believe there are spider mite predators in the garden that kill them eventually if I just keep spraying them with water. Here spider mites aren't a big problem. Other than blackspot, heat, nematodes, and lack of soil fertility, chilli thrips are the biggest problem. I'd worry about global warming bringing those north if I were you. I wondered where they found those odd rose varieties they used in the study until I noticed it was from the Middle East. I wish they used all one color of rose so we could tell if the color was the reason some varieties resisted the spider mites better, or if it was something else.

So, I know that us gardeners can become a little obsessed with things...so bare with me. This season, even before the heat wave of the past few weeks, my Hostas have been getting sunburned like never before. I've had them in the same place for the last 3 year and they've been fine. I've got at least 5 that I've had to move for fear of losing them. Now, I'd expect this after the heat wave we've been having, but this all started before that hit. I haven't fertilized, no trees have been cut in the area, watering practices have stayed the same, it's definitely burn vs over watering. Has anyone else noticed if the sun might be stronger this year? Or am I just crazy. Please let me know if there is something that might make them susceptible to burn that I might be missing. Touche,Steve! Lol! You forget that the cold that came down and scooped up up all that moisture that you got originally came from northwest Canada. BTW,it was 22 for the high here yesterday,so don't complain. Lol! Phil

From '78 - '82 we lived waaaaaaay down in the swamp about 30 miles north of here and had -48 F every year. Don't even THINK of breathing that air, direct . . .

We had January weather in November. Dropped down to single digit nights. This was the first time our yard was completely snow covered for Thanksgiving.

That lasted a few weeks, but now we've thawed out and had rain wash away the snow. We even raked up wet leaves last weekend. One day was so warm and sunny I had a twinge of spring fever come over me. It felt like the thaw after winter.

But I'm sure the snow will come again soon enough. I have to remind myself that the hostas like it cold for longer than I do.

We're havin' a heat wave! Only 11 this morning! More snow scheduled for tonight,then a brief "warm up",and more snow for Saturday and Sunday. This may be the coldest winter in a long time. Phil

We had one inch of snow in November here in upstate NY, zone 5a. Last weekend we had 40F and rain, but now we have 2 in snow on the ground, with snow cover usually until April 1. Temp last night was in single digits. All plants seem to be sleeping nicely.

Yea - I saw you are getting snow Phil - can you stand outside, face north and blow really hard? I would LOVE some snow! It is all going south of us if you can believee that......

Really hoping for a whomper of a storm for Christmas though......
