Ground Cover/Interplanting/Mulching
Comments (8)"do I mulch to cover the ground between plants to retain moisture and replenish the soil gradually or, what I really want, plant beneficial (and hopefully edible) plants in the clear spots between by set plants that will spread out and cover the ground and create a natural ground cover. " You do both! Mulching is great, as well as interplanting, maximizing your yield for your space. It's really not difficult at all, any space you have open, stick a smaller growing plant in, if the plant is two big you wil have a jungle an look like a miss - For example, if you have tomatoes spacing 4' and you say oh well I got a foot or so in-between the tomatoes, I'll stick a pepper plant in.. Eventually the peppers plant will compete with the tomatoes and sprawl all over like a jungle.. Now if you plant carrots, beets, leafy greens inbetween the tomatoes, you will have a nice low growing edible goudcover that will never get tall and look like a miss.. It will look neat and clean.. You could do this with anything.. The eggplant in the right hand corner bed you could interplant smaller plants, the tomatoes as well, and even the peppers.. Now the cucumbers and zukes are going to sprawl all over and create a groundcover naturally, you don't have to interplant vines like that.. But the tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers, you could diffenently squeeze some low growing plants that will make a nice, neat looking edible groundcover.....See MoreTemporarily cover ground nest
Comments (1)Sounds like yellow jackets, sometimes they use old mice tunnels to nest in. If you put dirt over during the day you will have returning wasp looking for the entrance and soon you be in trouble. Perhaps you can work from the other side, away from the flight path. If too much trouble, I would give them a shot of wasp killer when dark...then a shovel of dirt. In winter, most will die out...some queens will hide out somewhere till spring....See MoreCovering the Ground to Keep the Weeds Away
Comments (2)Old carpet is good, but bermuda grass will actually grow through it. Last year I had between all my rows "carpeted", and the blasted stuff came right up over it. When I pulled the carpet up last fall I had to get my sons to help, the bermuda grass had literally pinned it to the ground! Best thing to do to kill the stuff is a substance that the grass can't grow through... Tamara's pictures with the black stuff were great, that would kill anything. I've also used tin sheets (the kind they used to make tin roofs out of), great big sheets of cardboard (these are great, plus they enrich the soil as they degrade). Good luck, that stuff is insidious! Casey...See MoreCan you cover ground cover?
Comments (6)We put plastic over our ground cover to try and kill it and then mulch on top. Don't want to use pesticides because we want to replant in the garden.... Well the ground cover survived and grew through the plastic. It will not die. I rip it alk out every year and it comes back no matter what. It's a fight that never ends. It chokes out my other plants. This year I'm planning on launching a full attack....See Moremayalena
