Tues., 4-18: Fire Weather Watch, W & C OK

The NWS has issued a Fire Weather Watch for much of western and central Oklahoma for Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. Tuesday's forecast fire weather conditions include high temperatures from 65-100, minimum RH values from 8-60%, and winds from the southwest at 20-30 mph, gusting to about 40 mph.

You can check the NWS webpage linked below to see if you are included in this Fire Weather Watch. Its easternmost counties, at this time, are those that run roughly along and even slightly east of the I-35 corridor from Thackerville and Marietta to Ada to Chandler to Stillwater, and thence westward from those counties.

Of special note: temperatures in some parts of the state may hit 100 degrees today, and certainly will hit the 90s. With low RHs and high winds, tomorrow's weather will be especially dangerous in terms of wildfire and dangerous for firefighters as well in terms of their vulnerability to heat-related health issues.

Today's weather will be just slightly less dangerous and there is a Red Flag Fire Warning for several Texas counties just across the Red River from SW OK so folks in those counties need to maintain extra vigilance and awareness of what may be happening just across the river from them.

It will be almost as hot today as tomorrow, particularly in southern and western areas of our state. Remember that young, tender vegetation needs extra water when the temps and winds are this high this early in the growing season.

I expect the NWS will upgrade some or all of the area covered by Tuesday's Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Fire Warning.

If conditions worsen today, you may see a Fire Weather Watch, Red Flag Fire Warning or Fire Warning suddenly pop up for some areas today that likely would be in effect immediately.

I likely will be out at fires again today and tomorrow so won't be here very much to post fire warnings. If that is the case, y'all be sure to watch the weather and alert one another!
