Poultry grit question???

I can't remember who posted about using this around the hosta to keep out the voles but I am trying it to put around my bulbs this fall when planting to see how it works. How do you use it when you plant things? I was putting it in the bottom and then around the sides of the bulbs. Does that sound right? I will ask over on the bulb forum too. Thanks, Judy

It might keep the voles away, but wouldn't the chickens peck at the bulbs? :)

Well the grit is all under the dirt and plus we have no chickens. Whew, saved that problem, like I don't already have enough. lol!!

That must have been as very old post, Josh. Turkey grit is too large. At one point, I referred to 'starter' size as chicken grit and 'grower' size as turkey grit. For most soils you would use either grower grit or #2 cherrystone, but for small plants in pots with very small volumes you might want to use starter size or #1 cherrystone. I read here to dig the hole, line the bottom and sides with grit, then put soil back in, plant the hosta or bulbs in the soil, then cover the surface up to the plants, or over the planting of the bulbs.
I used a 50 lb bag of chicken grit ($8 about) and filled moats around troubled hostas with it. 50 lbs is nothing when you have a lot of hostas. I also 'improved' areas where I had voles or mice, that is before they sampled my pellets.

So is oyster shells just as good as the grit? Our local farm supply store has a 50 lb bag. Thanks, Judy

You should search this forum for 'oyster shells' (upper right corner), there are postings of people using them against voles.
