What Flowers to plant in Sept/Oct in MA?

Hi

I just moved to a new home in the Suburbs of Boston and can't wait to start gardening. Its been 15 years since I had a yard and that was in the Midwest.

I want to start preparing and planting now for spring/summer/fall flowers and am not familiar with the Boston/Zone 6 climate. The yard is sunny in the front and partial to full shade on the sides and in the back yard. The ground is also full of rocks.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to best prepare the soil (which is covered with a mix of grass and weeds) and what I can plant before the first frost. Also, can anyone recommend a book that includes a list of WHEN flowers should be planted in Zone 6?

I have bulbs for Coronaria Anemone, Darwin Hybrid Tulips and Vernus Crocuses and the yard already has 3 Rose of Sharons and Hostra.

Thank you!
