At 6 ft. not so small, actually--especially if spontaneous seedlings with natural (open and comparatively far-reaching) root systems. Probably get much better survival doing this later, after it has been raining for awhile and will be raining for awhile after they have been replanted.

If you have irrigated, I'd imagine that the ground is about perfect.

If not, the rootball may crack.

Luckily they were transplanted last Fall, so the roots should not be too big. I have had good luck transplanting conifers in dry weather, as long as they are not in active growth; i.e., the previous growth has hardened. But I really baby my plants. For gardens where they will get less care, I think bboy is right: wait for the rains.

You've already cut the roots and had them live, so that test has been passed. The outcome could be different if they had never been disturbed before.
