Hi everyone,

I am a newbie at Orchids and was wondering if there were any experienced people who can give me some insight. I just bought an orchid from trader's Joe. I think it is Cateyala. Right now it has 2 spikes and is flowering.

I have some questions:

1. Which variety is easy to reflower.

2. Which is the best place to get Orchids

3. What kid of fertilizer do you use.

4. Do all of them require indirect light

To answer some of your questions:

1) Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchids are probably the easiest to care for and re-flower because they enjoy the same conditions people enjoy with moderate light and moderate temperatures. But don't just stick with Phals, there are other easy to grow ones!

2)Best place to get orchids?? Hmmm, I've found that the local Lowe's or Home Depots and even Walmart carry some affordable orchids. But for the most unique selections and great bargains, the NW Flower and Garden Show hosts a number of vendors that offer tremendous deals on the last days of the show!!!! whooo hooo!!

3)Orchids in general are really low feeders not requiring that much in terms of fertilization. Each type of orchid is different so there's a little homework involved.

4)Again, lighting will vary from orchid to orchid. Since they are flowering plants, they will require some level of lighting, but some are more picky than others. Again, more homework for ya, but it's not too bad.

I grow mainly indoors, and I grow mainly bulbs... I also grow mainly in a rendition of the Gritty Mix. I have found that before I mix a batch, I need to soak the bark a bit so it's moist. If I do this, and I make sure I'm in keeping with the concept of the medium with regard to particle size, screening, etc... I have no issues following a re-pot. Also, aftercare is very important... ensuring that the plant has a good opportunity to adjust to it's new medium out of direct sunlight and winds. But if I fail to pre-wet the bark, or keep in mind the concept of the medium and aftercare, I'm doomed to failure. I found that there's no cheating when it comes to good preparation of the ingredients, using the right ingredients, proper aftercare, and that my habits in watering and fertilizing would change. I'd be watering more often, and feeding on a more consistent basis. One other thing I found is that not every plant will enjoy the Gritty Mix. There are a few that are happier in more moisture retentive circumstances... so I adjust for this using medium that more closely resembles the 511, or by adjusting the ingredient ratios or using different ingredients, creating a custom medium for the plant in question. Ambient temperature is a consideration in certain climates, too. Growing indoors, I keep pot edges from touching the window glass, and keep leaves off the glass, too. My preference is unglazed clay, though I do use a few plastic pots for certain plants more sensitive to temperature or moisture retention. One of the biggest mistakes I made in the beginning was not watering enough, and not ensuring the bark was pre-soaked prior to mixing batches of medium. But if I'm honestly doing everything exactly as directed, I have no issues, whatsoever. I think the keys are in understanding the concept, not taking any short cuts, adjusting my care habits, and understanding the limitations of my unique environment and those of the particular plant I'm trying to grow.

There is no magic potting mix. What you use depends on Climate and other factors. I'm not going to say use such and such because there are all sorts of factors to be taken into account. The blurb on the outside of my 40 litre bag of Diatomite says mix 10/15% of Diatomite with your other potting ingredients. If you are in doubt just put some chips on top of the potting material and see what happens. It seems to be beneficial but i've got no idea why. Every orchid i own has some in the mix or chipped and sprinkled on mounts. Not that i have many mounts. Only for orchids that grow best that way. I'll say it again. Mounting means Maintenance. Again. Select potting material(s) that is right for all the variables, the plant, the pot size, your growing conditions. Treated pine bark is no good statements might be right for tropical climates and some watering habits. But look at the picture. All those orchids are potted in bark based mixes. Phals roots keep rotting!

Computer challenged with photos, so not possible for right now. I'll try to describe. There are about 6 roots, but grow to 1.5 to 2 inches long, then the rot starts. They get quite shrivelled and mushy beyond the initial couple of inches. I have the plant in sphagnum from New Zealand, in a 3 inch pot. I didn't pack the moss in tightly, and water when the moss is almost dry (occasionally it is dry). I do keep my house cool at night and it is quite dull for us at this time of year (Pacific Northwest). I've taken it out of the plastic pot, trimmed off the mushy bits and rinsed off all of the old moss. I dunked the roots in hydrogen peroxide, and dried off. Used a cotton swab to dab rooting hormone on the areas, and put in a shallow terra cotta pot (very small now) with new moss that is only very slightly damp. Then I put it on a heating mat in a West window. I have a wee bit of cinnamon on the growing point as the last leaf that came out looked suspicious to me, and grew out with some deformations (mind you, I did summer the plant outside and it is possible a slug nipped at it). No cinnamon on the roots. What have I missed :) Kelly in Victoria

O.K. Let me rephrase that! I have read on the Growing Spaces forum about some people in the PNW having problems with rain coming in through the open solar vents. I believe that the solution was to have a rain deflector built over the opening. The last that I had time to look, most of the ones located in Oregon were coastal. I'm 30 to 40 miles from the coast as the crow flies. Here is a Google photo link! I'm actually to the right of where they're putting the arrow! The photo isn't really up to date either. I've expanded the ponds and tried to naturalise the watershed back to a more natural state. I've been doing what I can to control erosion! The difference between the basic purpose that they use it for and my needs are the temperature requirements. I don't need to keep it at 80F all winter, but I can't have it dropping below 60F or so. I did originally plan on having a hothouse built inside of a greenhouse from the beginning. That was put on the side for a while and might have to be worked in again. It would be more efficient, as not all of my orchids require constant higher temps. Many of them actually need a variation and/or a seasonal dormancy. I want to have a lot of space. I know how easy it is to outgrow something. I also plan on growing vegetables all winter and will use it to overwinter plants from outside. I have huge pots of lemon grass, citrus, etc. I eat virtually all organic. I was raised that way anyway. I stopped eating all fast food years ago because I got so ill from it. Lately, I have been finding out that there are many things that I'm very allergic to. Virtually everything that has been processed. I always thought that I was sensitive to GM foods. I'm finding out that it's pretty much all glutens and several other common things. The gardens do well all summer, but I want to grow a lot for the winter as well. So, I'm trying to kill as many birds with one stone as possible. One of my primary concerns has also been about earthquakes. I know that it's just a matter of time before we have a big one. I'm not paranoid about them. I've spent my whole life living on the Pacific Ring of Fire around the world. We had a major fire here four years ago. It demonstrated how easily my area would be cut off from the outside. Even the major roads are tenous at best! I like to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I have to say I'm terrible with orchids, a couple pf mine have leaves with accordion folds, I assume from lack of water or humidity. One did finally rebloom this year, Gooddale Moire. I keep them in south and west facing windows so the light is direct. My impression is that it is not bright enough compared to the greenhouse where I bought them at Aitken's Salmon Creek Irises, see link below. If you live close enough to visit you can see the orchids. They seem have year-round shipping for the west coast.

Hi, Sangeeta. Your cattleya is considered a "high-light" plant if you plan on indoor growing. I have my catts in an east-facing bay window that gets unobstructed morning light at least 4 hours a day. Keep your new plant out of direct light while it is blooming but after the flowers are done, move it to the brightest growing area you have. East or south-facing windows are best.
