..the lovely, and lush purple scapes late in the season!!!

I wish I had taken pictures when they first opened up--they were even more upright and more purple!!

I love the blooms of Just Joey the best, but mine really was not happy here in the summer, it did not bloom often enough, and the blooms would blow very quickly unless I cut them and brought them in. So with my limited space, I replaced him. Actually got the Buck Rose Prairie Sunrise, which has a surprisingly similar color to JJ and a bit of fragrance. Very pretty. Unfortunately, that's one that needs a lot of chemical protection from blackspot. I don't grow Marilyn M. Daybreaker I just got this spring and it has bloomed its head off. Interestingly, I've seen absolutely no blackspot--but I do spray Bayer Advanced Disease Control semi-regularly. Are you looking for a certain size bush? Prairie Sunrise will be quite compact and short but bushy. Medallion is gorgeous and HUGE blooms of very interesting apricot, but quite a tall spreading plant. It has relatively few thorns. It's rain-sensitive, but I grew it in Mobile, AL, and it handled the heat and humidity wonderfully, never looked very faded and blooms were generally still 6" even in mid-summer. Sunset Celebration is a solidly performing garden rose with pretty blooms, though not of exhibition quality (no pinpoint centers). Definitely Apricot. I haven't grown it in several years but it was healthy here in New Orleans. Over The Moon I haven't grown either, but I was asking around about it a few months ago and seem to recall hearing it does better in less humid climates, but that's second-hand information. I don't know. I'm wondering now about Tahitian Sunset, an AARS winner in 2006, and an apricot blend. I read it handles all kinds of weather and has great disease resistance AND fragrance on a bushy plant. Anyone here know if that's true? Mike

Stross, I live right here in N.O. I have grown Just Joey but not Marilyn Monroe. At one point I considered JJ my favorite rose; the ruffled petals are unique, the fragrance good, and the subtle blending of shades of apricot(actually sherbet orange to me) beautiful. But...I was never satisfied with the amount of blooms I got nor the wait time between flushes. Also, JJ blooms did much better in the cool months than our hot humid summers, when they didn't last more than 2 days. MM on the other hand is reportedly a hot climate rose. Related to St. Patrick, which I do know about and which loves it here. JJ and MM are actually different colors, though. And JJ is much more compact. If you go with JJ, I'd urge you to try to find it on fortuniana rootstock, perhaps Jim Mills in Buckatuna, MS? He specializes in fortuniana. Or one of the Florida nurseries. It will be a much more vigorous plant for you if you do. If you're open to other suggestions, I've actually replaced my JJ with the Buck rose Prairie Sunrise. It is very close in color, a different bloom form and only average diameter, but just as great a fruity fragrance, a nice, full, old fashioned bloom form, and on a compact bush, even smaller than JJ but bushy and attractive. This rose blooms much better for me. An alternative to Marilyn Monroe might be Special Occasion, which is gorgeous, a more manageable size plant, and, I think, much less thorny. You can check it out at the Heirloom roses site, though I'm sure some other vendors also sell it. My absolute favorite apricot cutting rose is the HT Valencia, which is healthy and a respectible bloomer here. The blooms hold very very well and are really big; unique vanilla/rose fragrance, too. But it's actually golden apricot, with virtually no pink tones. And the plant is leggy and a bit sprawling; not as huge as MM but just not a bushy landscape plant form.

HH...not a problem at all..thank you for the thought...and good that you took a wee break! It's a lot of work, canning...but in the middle of winter you and yours will be the lucky ones enjoying the fruits of your labor. ..YUM! My MM opened only two flowers yesterday for the first time, but even with the warm weather and sunshine we are having, they sure are slowwww to open...waiting to see if they all do. If they don't, it's alright...the buds are so stunning on their own. Looking forward to next year to see how much growth my 2-yr. old takes on. Happy canning, HH! :-) Jo.

I have two MM's and love her, even with all her thorns, akin to Elizabeth Taylor who is also terribly thorny as well. I have found MM very tough where she was originally called witner tender and fussy to grow and stingy to bloom. My first bush was so nice and tough that I bought the second and have been just as pleased with her as well. I also like her pollen parent St. Patrick. I grow her seed parent, Warm Wishes aka Sunset Celebration, though I wish it had a better bush under her and bloomed more. I wouldn't hesitate to put in another couple of MM's if I had the room and right spot to do it. John

Robin, the flowers are more pale now--but they are pretty intensely purple when they are first opened up!
I was pleasantly surprised at how intense they were! This pot is not in direct sunlight and I wonder
if that helps them to be so dark a purple? Not quite as deep as Ventricosa, but definitely the second most in
my garden!

And, McT/Myrle, this is the second summer I've had it! It is quite different than it was the first year
for me. I really like the immature version as well, if not more than this year's version!!!

Very nice, but then that is par for the course. You grow 'em good!!! And you pictures are always first rate, as you have heard many times!

I saw a couple nice MMs at Andy's in Troy earlier this year and was really tempted - but I hate the name (same reason I don't have an Elvis). Maybe I need to get one, pretend it is a sport, and then just rename it! It sure is pretty!!

Anyhoo--I don't like the name either--never was a fan of her or Elvis either though I have 'Elvis Lives'!
Funny, my mother just loved Elvis, though she wasn't one to swoon but she did like him and his music.

I put off getting 'Hanky Panky' cause I don't like that name either but finally 'caved' and wound up losing it,
anyway!LOL

I'm kinda a conservative gal so several names just make me avoid buying them--I'd hate to point to one
to my also conservative friends and say something that would shock them, of me! LOL

Hope we can see one another next year, since we didn't this time--it's been awhile, ya know!!
