Rare and unusual plants

Not a lot of hostas on this website, but a lot of interesting and rare companion plants from Barry Glick, one of the most well-known plantsmen in the world. He does ship retail where he does not have an outlet. I guess you have to call or email him for prices and availability.

Sandy, thank you for the link! I happen to grow a handful of the plants featured.....I transplanted a few from the cottage several years ago and they are growing well. Each spring I go looking for these treasures in the bush but more to enjoy looking at rather than to dig up.

The blue hepatica I dug up from where it was hidden from view and transplanted it nearer to cottage for closer appreciation. It survives with about only 4-5" of soil as the garden is built on rock.

I have a huge trillium! regular sized ones too and they are companions to Frances Williams. All foliage disappears for the summer and reappears each spring.

The false Solomon's seal is so laden with red berries that the stalks hang down to the ground. What is interesting is that the berries are actually green, not red, but as the red spots appear, they eventually completely cover the green! This year the leaves really dried out early, so I cut the stalks down, including berries, to about a foot long. The birds don't seem interested in these particular berries.

False Solomon's Seal,and Trilliums abound in my woodland garden. I even transplanted some FSS to another part of the garden. Phil

woody and lacey, w/ the exocorda, i was interested in it because the book said it was wicked tolerant of dry shade. [My similar looking regular button bush(cephalanthus), which i love, is in boggy area. It wants to get giNORmous so i've whacked it this year(its second here).] Don't know why you 2 chose exocorda, but you may want to consider my fav unknown (mostly)and VERY deep shade/drought tolerant, shrub, Rhodotypus. Spring blooming and How do i love thee? Let me count the ways:I'm guessing it's in the kerria family, has same leaf but larger, and BEAUTIFUL single white open petal flowers(2" diam.). After bloom, berries go black (common name is jetbeard.) Lovely layered arching stems like neillia. btw, that's a great idea for clematis- to grow them over shrubs that have gone by. never quite saw it like that before but i'm defly going to do this. calliope, can i just scatter the lavatera or do i have to start w/ pots (if so, it will just never happen here, sigh). It would be really great to run into you guys at the Conference. If you can make it, while you're here plan on visiting the new Smithgall Arboretum division of the ABG in the afternoon to see it in its early days. If you haven't already, or even if you have. It's going to be very elegant and impressive someday, but today's neonate version will be gone with the wind in the process. McMahon's Nursery would also appeal to a bunch of plant nuts for sure. Scott used to be with the ABG and will be talking and offering some of his treasures at the Fall Conference, but the nursery itself is only about 10 minutes farther north from the Smithgall up 129 on the left after you pass Hwy 52. Keep an eye open for a bank of flowers with a greenhouse behind them and don't be distracted by cows in the pasture on the right.

Anyone else at Blanchette's today? It was absolutely mobbed. Everything was 25% off. I was buying Hostas for the NEHS summer Auction. Believe me it is hard to find plants that collectors don't already have, but Blanchette's has some older culitivars that are not being sold in many places today. In any case I had to park on the street and wait in line for about an hour, that's how crowded it was. No wagons or carts available, I just had to drag flats full of plants to the register. The line was as long as the one at Space Mountain. Still it was a good time as we all talked plants while standing in line. It seemed like everyone had at least one plant that they were "expert" with. It was common to see someone leave the line, to get another plant while someone held their place. I think I'll go back, but I'll wait until the crowds calm down. They are holding regular hours this year. The inventory will likely draw down, but the plants are great and the prices can't be beat. Have you ordered from him before? I tried to get info once and our emails seemed to go round in circles. My questions were never answered and when I would try to clarify he would resend the previous emails to me that had nothing to do with my question. That went on for a while so I just gave up.

Never ordered from him. I just found the site on another forum and thought it looked interesting, and I really haven't had the chance to go through the listing plant by plant but I might try and order some if I can get in touch with him. Thanks for the heads up, Chris.

I've been collecting woods wildflowers for years, so I already have a lot of what he's offering, but I thought I might find something different. Always looking for unusual mayapples and arums.

there's a place with very many unusual and rare plants down around Ann Arbor Michigan with an unusual name - help, Ken? - the place with the huge tortoise that wanders about the gardens . . .

also, my recent road trip cause me to find a quince tree, if anyone wants seeds?
