I'd like to host the fall swap for Eastern Massachusetts

Hi all,

The spring swap was too long a drive for me, so I thought I'd offer my house for a location this fall. I'm in Plymouth, about an hour south of Boston towards the cape. I'd love to combine this with a trip to Katsura as well, which is about 20 minutes back up Rt. 3 from where I live. I need to chat with my Mom before committing to a date, but I am thinking a Saturday in September is traditional. Since I have only been to one swap before, please let me know what kinds of things I need to start thinking about. Thanks!

That would be great! A swap without a 90 minute drive - yippee. And a trip to Katsura ... I'm in.

The first thing would probably be the date. For me, the earlier the better, as I have some extended travel starting late in the month and can't plant too close to when I leave.

Ok talked to my Mom and she is available on the 13th and the 27th. I need her for babysitting! And cause she is the inspiration for all of my gardening. So please let me know which of these dates you prefer and we'll go with the best date for most.

O.K. Well it seems that this is a great time to divide plants and I am willing to host a Plant Swap for this fall if there are enough interested persons. Please let me know if anyone is interested. This is a final call so we can determine how many persons would like to trade. Open to all Garden Club members from the East. I have had people reply from Kingston to Montreal. Dates could be Sept. 18th or 25th.

I'm out of town Sept 23-28 and Oct 5- Nov 1, so if it's on Sept 23 or Oct 14 I'll have to miss it. I don't have much ready to swap anyway, so I will just plan to see you all next spring, or I might be able to foist off a few plants on someone who's going to be at Katy's Marthas Vineyard Extravaganza in early September. Right now the only thing I've got growing that I'd bring that's at all unusual is rosemary-leaf willow (Salix elaeagnus, aka S. rosmarifolia). There are some variegated hydrangeas coming along, but they're a bit iffy anyway; hard to overwinter that first year after rooting. Other than that it's just some very common stuff, like thyme, rudbeckia, angelica, peach-leaf bellflower, columbine ... nothing anyone could get too excited about! I think you should go ahead and pick one of the dates listed above, and if anyone wants anything that's on my list we'll see if we can get a volunteer to bring it. Cheers - DtD

Hi, I have been thinking about this thread. I think it was the spring swap that got confusing because we had about 5 threads going at the same time about it and you had to check all of them to figure out what information was posted where. I also noticed that the NH swap tried switching to the Exchange and only had about 3 posts to that thread since opening it and people kept posting to the Discussions thread. None of the other swap threads have 90+ threads, so they can continue to use the Discussion threads to talk about who is bringing what and what time it is and how to get there etc. and leave the exchange thread just for wants and haves. I don't have the patience either to copy/paste all the relevant information to a new post. So since I started the thread, I will open a new thread, on the Discussion list this morning. It will simply say Eastern MA Fall Swap 2005 Continued. If people want to continue to post everything to this thread that is fine, if someone would prefer seperating out the wants/haves to an Exchange thread feel free to start a thread there. At least we will then have only two threads going basically. Ready, set, go.. :-)

Marie -- I forgot that we're not supposed to call you Idabean. Sorry.... I can't access your email address from your member page, so I'll post the recipe here, tho I fear it is OT? Easy Plum Torte by Autumn Hills Orchard in Groton MA 1/2 c uns butter 3/4 c sugar 1 c unbleached flour, sftd 1 tsp baking powder pinch salt 2 eggs 10-12 pitted purple plums, halved sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon for topping Preheat oven to 350. Cream butter and sugar in bowl. Add flour, bkg pwdr, salt and eggs and beat well. Spoon batter into 8 or 9" spring form pan. Place plum halves, skin side up, on top of batter in circular pattern. Sprinkle with lemon jce, cinn, sugar to taste. Bake approx 50 min, til center springs back and edges are lightly browned. EAT and enjoy!

I agree with the earlier date because I don't have much luck overwintering plants that go in later in the fall. The earlier the better. Thanks! It is about time we Metro Boston folks took a drive.

That's great you're offering to host. The 13th is probably the better date, so people can get plants in the ground as early as possible. Hosting the Spring Swap was easier than I thought it would be, because people were so helpful about bringing refreshments, set up, and clean up. "Many hands make light work" so they say, and it was true in this case. It went very smoothly (aside from the parking situation, but that is particular to my house).

What I did was start a thread about a month before the Swap date for people to hash out what they have to offer and who wants what. About a week before, I asked people to email me so that I could have their email on record, know what their first name was, and then replied with an email that included directions and details.
