Dendrobium nobile

I think this is Dendrobium nobile but not for certain. I got it off my father unnamed a few years back. It is reaching a good size now. Flowers well every year but this must be the best it has looked. It was hard to take a photo that did it justice.

I don't grow Dend nobile, but your plant/blooms is awesome! Is it fragrant? I was recently given a large kiekie that might be den nobile. I sure hope it is! Good growing. Sheila

Great growing. Looks like the species to me. Though did you notice the difference in color between the 2 photos? I think this is because you shot the second in low light. I dont think nobile is that blue. Have you considered using the photo editor to adjust the color tone?

The answers to Arthur's questions will help. I agree that it looks like you have spider mite infestation. While attached to the orchid, place one of the affected leaves between a white paper towel and wipe the bottom and top on the leaf with gentle pressure. If you see red or orange marks on the paper towel you have spider mites. I use Bayer 3 in 1, but it is not made for inside the house. You can you any pesticide of your choosing. The key is to check that it kills mites and insects. Also apply following the directions. You may need to apply every 7-10 days until the mites are gone. Spider mites are attracted to dry condtions. So think about where you are growing this orchid.

It is a species, Dendrobium moschatum. Not a nobile dend.

Andrea, I'm able to get a cool temp. in the fall as the weather gets colder. I've done it two ways. The year before last I had them outside until it got to around 45 degrees. This year they stayed in the greenhouse all year and I start running my heater slowly to save money. In Sept I set the temp at 45 put most likely it never gets the cold. Then in Oct I put it at 50 degrees. Nov gets 55 degrees and when Dec. hits we put 60 at night and 68 during the day. Remember in a greenhouse just because I set a temp. at 50 degrees that means it's a min. but the sun may bring the temp up to 85 degrees. In my reading I think these nobile need at least a 58 to 55 degree temp for at least 2 to 3 hours per day for a months time. Just leaving them outside late into the fall usually meets those requirements. Even if you had to move it inside to a enclosed porch if you don't want to get it too cold. I find them easy to rebloom, and yes there are a few that don't even require a cool period to bloom. I also don't give them fertilizer from Sept until after they bloom. August might be an even better time to stop giving them fertilizer. Look up Yamamoto orchids in Hawaii for more instructions.

The word mild depends on where you live. The ancestors of the modern hybrid come from a monsoonal climate. Warm, wet summers, drier winter. They are hardy "outside' here down to about 2C. and seeing that the average winter day temps here is Min 7C Max 17C they are no problem to grow. The monsoon forest tends to lose all its leaves in the dry season so the orchid needs high light to flower. Some of the modern hybrids are more tolerant of less than ideal conditions. Growers here use treated Radiata Pine bark as the base of various mixes. Mixes in more tropical places tend to be more arid because bark breaks down quickly in tropical places. So you will get info. that varies according to the source. Use spag? You can grow anything in spag with the right conditions. Wrong conditions such as cold and wet lead to problems.

That is an incredible plant! WOW! Great growing!

But ifraser is right the 2 photos are different in color. Which is closer? More pink or more blue? Probably the 1st (more pink)?

Sheila - it is a little fragrant, but not much. Not to my nose anyway.

As for the colour. Yes, the second photo was taken in darker light. i just couldn't take a photo I was happy with. Neither of them do the plant justice. The flowering was incredibly thick. WHich is why I included the second photo which I think better illustrates how dense the flowering was. It is hard photographing something so big. The first photo is probably a little more realistic in colour although it has finished flowering so I can't check.

I just might get 3-4 D.nobile's and put all together in one pot. They happy with just Spagh? Or are they bark lovers?
