Den atroviolaceum 'Pygmy' x 'Little Elf'

Brought this home from the Redland's '07 festival last May and it is still only 7" tall, blooms spring and winter with long-lasting two-inch (wing to wing) flowers on new and previously bloomed psb's. It was in bloom in May and is currently in bloom again with several buds still to open.

I love Phals AND Dens, which can fit my criteria - small, fragrant, long-lasting flowers or bloom more than once a year, grow in my conditions. These are all new, so who knows if I can grow them: Dendrobium aberrans Dendrobium atroviolaceum ('Pygmy' x sib.) Dendrobium draconis - smells like oranges Dendrobium eximium Dendrobium Himezakura 'Sanokku' Dendrobium loddigesii Dendrobium macrophylum (not small!) Dendrobium moniliforme Banri kou Dendrobium moniliforme Benisuzume Dendrobium moniliforme 'Hakuhou' ('White Bird') Dendrobium moniliforme Hime no mai Dendrobium moniliforme Kuomaru botan Dendrobium moniliforme 'Shin Haya Tama' Dendrobium moniliforme, unknown currently Dendrobium moniliforme, unknown currently Dendrobium unicum The moniliformes are ideal - fairly long-lasting flowers, fragrant, small plants that grow straight up, rather than sprawling. Amazing foliage. Can bloom more than once a year. Kevin, where did you get that Den. formosum???? The flowers are so amazing, I don't even care it's not fragrant. Also, today there's a beautiful one featured on Andy's site, Den. ceraula (gonzalesii). Be still, my heart. And, it's not mounted - hate the daily misting routine. 12 mounties is 12 too many. Hey, Tyler - Can you say more about the direct light your plants receive? My B. nodosa gets E/SE light, supplemented by 2 T8s, and it blooms. Although, if your Den unicum blooms... I'm stumped. Mine blooms in a little less supplemental light than the nodosa gets, although the nodosa's almost touching the window screen, and the unicum's about 18" back. My unicum gets the same light as 2 winter bloomers that stay small - Den atroviolaceum & Den aberrans, plus the aberrans has a lovely fragrance. Some of the atroviolaceum flowers are open now. Also small and in bloom: - Den laevafolium - Den Mini-Snowflake - about 12" tall but grows straight up - Haraella odorata - blooms all year long but not in bloom constantly - Masdevallia Celtic Frost - Masdevallia erinacea (horrida) - Miltoniopsis Robert Hull - about 10" tall but not bushy - Sophrolaelia Marriottiana (flava) - flowers resemble little yellow Catts, which I don't have enough light to grow - Taeniophyllum pygmeas - tiny leafless orchid, mounted, that has tiny, successive-blooming flowers - Tuberolabium kotoense In spike and will bloom during winter and stay small: - Aerangis fastuosa - B nodosa - Chiloschista usneoides - leafless, mounted, tiny - Den aberrans - Dendrobium Himezakura 'Sanokku' - Jumellea comorensis - Paph. Estella - a Paph that stays small - several Phals These are all in the E/SE light, supplemented either by the T8s or 2 octopus lamps w/ 26W CFLs. Those bearded boffins with PHDs decide sometimes that an orchid species needs a new name and Doctor Google is in complete agreement because a search gives lots of hits on Dendrobium normanbyense. But another group of boffins have to agree otherwise the new name doesn't get a mention in the World checklist of selected plant families kept at Kew.

Marci, congratulations. The little gnome face is great. Is yours fragrant?

Last May, I got one when visiting Shelldance Orchids in Pacifica, CA. It was in bloom then and is in spike/bud now. If I'm really good, maybe it'll bloom twice a year. LOL Seriously, it was the perfect downsize from the macrophyllum. Whitecat8

Marci, mine's 5" tall and has 10 pbs and a 10" spread. How about yours?

Yeah, Kev - what's up with that? Did you say you were backing off Dens somewhat?

WC8 - Mine is 7" tall, six psbs and a 6" spread. I'd love to see pics of yours when it blooms. What media is yours in? I usually repot but left mine in the original mix which stays moist. Is yours fragrant? Mine doesn't seem to be now but I believe it was in spring. Guess I'll have to wait to May to see if my notes are right. Another flower on my little 'gnome' just opened. Love these little guys.

Mine's in medium bark in a plastic pot w/ thick sphag on top because it dries out fast. This spring, the new bark will have sphag mixed in.

I don't remember a scent, but they're supposed to have one, right?

A question - some of my leaves have a few small black spots on them. An experienced grower here said they were normal and not to worry. Now the buds have what look like the same kind of spots. Does yours do this? (I can post pix in another thread, if that would help.)

White Cat - a couple of leaves on mine have a black spot, but I'm not sure what you mean about the flowers. A picture might help.
