Cold hardiness in zone 8a
Comments (3)Well........ Not sure about quite a few of those, but I think you'll be fine with the following: Saba Mysore Raja Puri And these are pretty reliable here in zone 7 (and even colder): m. lasiocarpa m. sikkimensis These probably would NOT be good choices: Hua Moa Dwarf Red I'm not sure about the others. Ones that I can recall off the top of my head that wouldn't be suitable in zone 8a would be: Jamaican Red musa beccarii AeAe Cavendish musa zebrina (or Rojo, Sumatrana) Too tired to think right now, but that's a start. And to be sure, none of the fruiting types are really completely reliably hardy in zone 8a without some form of protection, usually in the form of mulch. Species bananas, such as musa sikkimensis, and of course musa basjoo, are hardier on average than the fruiting types....See MoreGround Orchids - Are they really hardy in Zone 8b?
Comments (4)If you have the one known as Chinese Ground Orchid, Bletilla striata, then it would be hardy for you, temperature wise. On the other hand, the Philippine Ground Orchid, Spathoglottis plicata, is strictly a tropical plant and it's doubtful if it would survive at temperatures below freezing. I grow Bletilla striata at several locations in my gar'den. with various amounts of sunlight and shade. Requires well drained soil or faces the danger of bulb rot. Voles love them and as a consequence, they need protection from the critters! If left undisturbed, they can form fairly large colonies in just a few years. I have heard that Spathoglottis plicata can be a very demanding plant. requiring high humidity and constant attention to supplying moisture. IMO, I think it is shameful and a sign of care-less management, that HD and other plant retailers, would purchase from a supplier that don't provide the Botanical binomial name, Hardiness and cultural information on their tags or pots....See MoreHardy fragrant perennials for zone 4
Comments (18)In my gardens some of the perennials that have a nice scent are Mother of Thyme, lavender, crab apple tree blossoms (right now in full bloom with hundreds of bees in them), grape hycinths, iris, jonquils, tulips, oriental lilies, peonies, lily of the valley, Royal Standard hosta, lilacs, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some....See MoreFragrant Evergreen Shrubs 2' hardy in zone 6 - suggestions?
Comments (19)bboy: you're not listening to me. I wouldn't care if it said I'm in zone 10 because I've had plants such as the Frost Proof Gardenia die in my zone despite them saying they're hardy in zone 7. Therefore I'm trying to be a bit more conservative and find plants that say they're hardy to zone 6 so I can stop killing plants and wasting money. Obviously something about where I live is tough on plants (I'm at 500' elevation and much of Puyallup is much lower elevation, those maps aren't going to take that into consideration so relying completely on those maps doesn't make sense). gardengal: I'm really glad you brought up Daphne x transatlanica 'Summer Ice' or 'Eternal Fragrance', I planted both of these last fall, they have both lost most of their leaves, not sure if I should worry about this as I've had this happen sometimes with Daphne Odora yet had them leaf out in the summer. I'll look into D. tangutica or xburkwoodii 'Carol Mackie' or 'Somerset', not familiar with those at all, thanks for the suggestion....See Moreplantknitter
