So far they don't eat my Lychnis coronaria, marigolds, Corydalis lutea, hellebores, Caryopteris, Amsonia, Eupatorium 'Chocolate', Epimedium, Irises, Weigelia, Salvia coccinea and S. greggii..... I assume you only mean flowering plants and shrubs. I don't do many annuals so can't comment much on them. The deer left my self-seeded larkspurs alone. They really are hoofed locusts!

I would try Cardinal flower (lobelia cardinalis), Mistflower (Eupatorium coelestinum), Great Blue Lobelia (lobelia siphilitica), they are all relatively short. I'm not sure how deer resistant they are. IME, deer resistance is often a factor of what is left to eat... Normally, I would suggest that you add some grasses and sedges, like fox sedge or sweet grass, but those would definitely get eaten by deer right away. So probably not a good choice given your criteria.

George, I am living in an isolated land base that has allowed the deer population to exceed dangerous deer pop./per sq mile ratios in NE. One of the interesting concerns we are now facing is the deer are doing tremendous damage to the native plant population. That said the small current concession to the problem has been to add an addition week on to the hunting season. When I read your thoughts re gooseneck I wanted to suggest to you even if you appreciated the plant when it was not in flower it looks really raty after being deer pruned and will send energy to the root system to promote more deer food that can not only look raty but as you know be near to impossible to get rid of. If you are still on the fence re: this choice I will look through some old photo's to see if I can visually dis-wade you. kt

What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. They also devoured a barberry, and hostas are out of the question. One day last winter we looked out our window and saw a doe eating birdseed out of one of our bird feeders! What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.
