another wildlife mystery - is anyone good at sound id?

I've been hearing the most interesting wildlife noises at night. There seems to be a pair of these things talking to each other. One seems close by in my woods and it is answered by another one that sounds a few houses away.

Those are frogs (toads?). I have seen them, but haven't a name for you.

yeah, they do have a croakiness to them now that you mention it. I see tons of toads/frogs around here, so that is it for sure. Yet, they don't sound like any frogs/toads I've ever heard before. The ribbit is much longer than normal.

Golden Wings, yes!!! she had little or no dieback for me in Ohio, repeats very well-- I planted a trio of them with r. rubrifolia 'Carmenetta' behind them. The latter (aka r. glauca) for foliage and hips. You might also check out Autumn Sunset, Alchymist, and Elegance--they were all cane-hardy for me in Ohio. Of these 3, Autumn Sunset would be the best repeater, then Elegance, then once-blooming Alchymist. Jim, your best bet is a climber that will bloom on both old and new wood. Another very hardy large shrub which should cover a trellis for you "Weiss Aus Sparrieshoop"--semi-double, elegant white blooms. Jim, I think about these roses all the time, longingly, because most would not grow well HERE!!!

jejvtr, FWIW: The arrangement I suggested for the surrounds is directly from DOLBY LABS specs. Now if they who invented Dolby Surround don't know where the speakers should go, then I suppose no one does. Crutchfield? Now there's a true professional outfit. Sort of like Best Buy/Circuit City for the internet. Gauranteee they know ALL there is to know (sarcasm if you don't recognize it) about AV systems. "You offer such great advice and in such a polished tone, it makes me want to hang on your every word, follow all your threads and responses - let me guess you are in your 20's and you really do "know it all" don't you? (sic)" I'm sorry I don't come across with a "polished tone" as you would like. But it REALLY bothers me when someone NOT in this profession gives such glaringly incorrect advice. I have a difficult time being politically correct when dealing with ignorance. My bad that. But I can't see sugar coating it. Out of ignorance you gave bad advice. And, to me, giving bad advice is stupidity. I equate that ging of bad advice with giving road directions when you really don't know the way. Not a smart thing to do. And FYI I actually do not claim to "know it all". And, unless I started in this industry before I was born, I am not some 20 year old (30 or 40 either for that matter).

Your experience may be correct and it woud be hard for me to disagree without knowing the exact details of what you did. If you were to compare STC or OITC ratings of manufacture of the same window , one with dissimilar glass glass package in dual pane and one with triple pane. You would see virtuallly know difference in the numbers. In most cases with a window manufacturer that produces windows for sound control you would find no triple panes offfered. The science says otherwise But if what you do works , it works. I have triple paned unitsbin my house and I know when a car drives by when I’m awake at about 200 ‘.

Can You Help ID Another New Mystery Rose?

I am pretty certain that after a little more research and a few more visits to observe the blooms as they mature, that I have identified this rose. I believe it to be the early Austin English Rose - Bibi Meizoon", 1989 release. Some more images of blooms from today that are fully open now. I kept looking at the blooms and they reminded me very much of The Reeve. Sure enough, when I looked up the parentage, it is "The Reeve X Chaucer".. This rose has a lot of Gallica/Hybrid China close up in its pedigree through Chaucer and Constance Spry. Interestingly, it would seem that if is had been bred 150 years ago, it's genetics would probably qualify it as a Hybrid Perpetual. This is a rare one. I have never seen a live plant before and never known anyone who has grown it. So I will watch it with interest for the remainder of the season to see how it performs. Right now all three plants are covereed in huge globular gorgeous pink blooms. We did have a pretty good rain two days ago and a few of the blooms were a bit balled, but most opened fine. I suspect that this one would ball badly in a wet climate. But she very much likes the Okanagan Valley with our dry warm climate.. Cheers, Rick

Yes, gray tree frogs. They are amazing in that they can change color cells in their skin to help blend in with the trees. They are mottled, and
can change from a pale lichen green to white through various shades of gray to almost charcoal. When the males want to get the females' attention, besides calling, they quickly stretch out their back leg to expose a patch of bright yellow on their sides. My favorite amphibian! (though the wood frogs and peepers run close)

i am only posting this because, as i was clicking to read your post, i wondered if it was what you were posting about.>> the strangest mammal noise i have ever heard here was 23 yrs ago after we first moved here and we heard this huge nighttime racket up in the trees. i seem to recall it was like raucous laughter. well, the neighbors heard it and came out to explain to us that it was possums!
