Lawn Mushrooms??? Poisonous??

Every year I go nuts removing these little mushrooms that appear daily throughout our backyard lawn- drives me NUTS!

So far our Golden Retriever hasn't seemed interested in them, but she is a grass grazer and likes to "help" me weed. Does anyone know if these little (1"-1.5") mushrooms are poisonous??

Maybe, maybe not. You need an expert to ID them. You might try the folks at our local Oregon Mycological Society at http://www.wildmushrooms.org.

I doubt anyone can say whether or not a particular dog will eat them. My two sniff then leave.

Then too, poisonous to people isn't necessarily poisonous to dogs. And vice versa.

That said, you're likely to be more comfortable if you rake and discard.

You might try aerating the lawn, it should improve drainage and at least reduce the number of mushrooms.

You wait until the grass is dead. This can take up to 10 days depending on conditions. If the only difference between PI killer and regular grass and weed killer is that it has triclopyr in it, it should still work. Triclopyr is for woody plants and killing things like trees and stuff. Oh by the way I hope your son was careful not to get it on your landscaping. It doesn't sound like he's in to reading labels.

I can't say grass would thrive on the amount of dirt you would have on the cardboard. Maintaining right level of moisture would be very difficult,not to mention nutrents. If you cut the plants down I take it you aren't highly allergic to the ivy. Perhaps skip the cardboard and plant grass same as you would in the absence of ivy. Mowing and/or weed eating the area will soon kill the ivy.

Hello, Sorry but the mushrooms are going to become more plentiful before they finish their job. In Feb 2010 we had a 2.5' diameter Silver Maple removed but left the stump cut low enough that I put soil over it and planted grass. We've had steadily more mushrooms each season so far and this year has been the worst. The mushrooms that are growing have taproots! Anyway, I just mow over them but one is in the garden and almost the size of a football. I don't have dogs so I don't really care about the mushrooms and actually like them since they are helping to break down our old tree. Even with a stump grinder, you're going to get mushrooms growing on the roots in the grass 10' away from the stump. I would consult your veterinarian about the possible effects eating mushrooms could have on your dogs. There are plenty of dangers inside the house too, i.e. raisins, chocolate, underwear....etc.

They resemble Coprinopsis atramentaria which I once cooked and ate -- tasted good, but there wasn't much of them. If you're eating wild mushrooms, someone once said that you ought to know the mushroom so well than you can call it by its scientific name. But if they're in my garden, I love the look and diversity of mushrooms that pop up. The only mushroom I might consider destroying would be a deadly amanita, and then only if I thought someone might eat it by accident, for the amanitas are beautiful.
