What's in bloom in your garden this week, June12th?

Things are definitely late by now, the rose peak should have happened before the week end, and I have just a few roses opened now. IF the sun stays out this week, this week and next week should be the highlights of the season.

In bloom now:

Roses (Stanwell Perpetual, Yolande d'Aragon, Great Maiden's blush just starting, Altissimo, St Swithun timidly)

Clematis Henrii

Peonies, plenty of them but still barely 10% of what I am expecting

Phlox

I am sure I am forgetting a few things. I'll take a tour later today to look for stragglers!

This time I took a tour, and wrote down everything. I've been away for a couple of days and needed the tour to get my head back into the garden. If I read my own handwriting correctly, here's what I've got.

Salvia patens (Blue Angel), Salvia microphylla (red), garden heliotrope, colombine, siberian iris, masterwort, semi-wild daisy, bush clematis, lemon lillies, helebores (still going!), foxglove, perennial salvia (volunteers), peonies, thrift, dianthus, soapwort, campanula, red valerian, heuchera, coreopsis, allium, crambe cordifolia, angelica archangelica, anemone canadiensis (a thug!), wild daisy, snow in summer, wooly thyme, geranium, oriental poppy, lady's mantle, epimedium, nepeta (low), rose campion, and one little pink heart left on one bleeding heart. And, sadly, quite a few weeds.

In the woody category, cotoneaster, styrax, smokebush, rhodies and azaleas, heath, lavender, wigela, mountain laurel, kousa dogwood, deutzia, and cranberry viburnum.

What a wonderful time of year to be a gardener.

On my woodland walk today I found garlic mustard, and some small shrub with white, 4-petaled flowers that I would have sworn was a wild rose, but it had no thorns. I couldn't find it in either my Peterson's or the Ct. Botanical Society website. Not too many wildflowers in bloom right now - more in my yard than in the woods, LOL.

Wow, this has got to be the peak in everyone's garden, right? So many great sounding flowers! Here's my list, from memory, since it's dark out. Woodies: late lilacs, enormous old red rhodies, swamp azalea, kousa dogwood, viburnum (American cranberry), carolina jessamine, red wigela, purple smoke bush, clematis montana rubra. Yellow-variegated sambucus is almost open, kerria japonica is just finishing up. Some of the early hydrangea are budding up - the white with enormous blooms (I call it Dolly Parton, but I think it might be Limelight?) and a division of preziosa that's sitting in a pot waiting for me to cart it up to Mindy. Perennials: siberian iris, rampant canadian anemone, red masterwort, columbine, money plant, heuchera (a dozen types), sea thrift, pinks, camassia, allium (some nifty new ones this year), nepeta, purple mullien, lots of columbine (red canadian and wild blue), wild daisies, sweet woodruff, pink geranium, wood hyacinths, foxglove. Oh, yeah, Crambe cordifolia - what a wild and wooly thing that is, a potted division is blooming as is another half that's in the ground. The peonies are about to burst, I hope they hold off until the rain stops! Annuals: my favorite is pink gazania, will bloom all summer and has the nicest silvery foliage. Lots of tender salvia and those nifty blue-eyed white daisies, Osteospermum fruticosum. I just love reading about what everyone has in bloom!

Belle, hope you're enjoying Pisa. We spent some time there a couple of years ago and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Away from the tower, there were few tourists and the city was very nice - I think I liked it better than Florence, because it was quieter and felt more "real". I meant to go around with a pen and paper and make a list, but ... you know how it is. Too many weeds to pull. So, from memory, I've got Shrubs and vines: fairy, new dawn and bonica roses, slender deutzia, various clematis. Most of the Hydrangea - Annabelle, I think, it's got huge white flowers and pale green leaves, is in full swing, Preziosa and the blue mopheads are just barely showing color, except Endless Summer which has been going for a week or more. A big old kousa volunteer has really earned its keep this month - it's beautiful. Oh, yeah, Mountain Laurel is almost done but still looks good, along with Nandina, which blooms for a really long time. Perennials, bulbs and subshrubs: loads of lavender, hardy salvia (a volunteer, unknown variety), a wonderful pink snapdragon that wintered over, shasta daisies and some "wild" daisies too, several types of thyme, black-eyed susan, lance-leaf corepsis, peach-leaf bellflower, tunica, soapwort, various dianthus, many kinds of tender salvia, hosta, balloon flower, allium (several varieties, including a smallish, pure blue that's new to me this year). Red valerian, good old hellebores, and various daylilies. Low nepeta is still going, along with several low-growing types of campanula. Oh, yes, foxglove is everywhere, and so is rose campion! Queen of the Prairie is just starting to bloom - that is about it for flowers. Sounds like a lot; if I could just get it all organized it might actually look like a garden. Patty, you can also tell a lot about the kind of gardener each of us is. I've got a lot of plants that most people would not allow in their yards - wild things that pop up all over the place. I'm just a sucker for anything that blooms well.

My husband finally finished the bluestone patio in our new hot tub area...yay! Now I have to rework some of my brick edging in that garden and shuffle some plants around to soften the patio edge. Then I'll add some containers and wall decor on the new fence and side of the house. A trip to Homegoods may be in my future. I've decided to remove the weeping cherry. It's taking up too much room and has developed a rather unattractive form-not worth the space for maybe two weeks of flowers in the spring. In it's place, maybe a japanese maple or a conifer like that Korean fir 'Horstmans Silberlocke' I've been lusting after for years in Monique's garden. Earlier this week I picked up a bunch of tomato cages. This will be the year I venture into vegetables, cherry and grape tomatoes in pots on the patio. I also plan to modify the cages for dahlias-maybe keep them somewhat upright this year. Usually I have all my containers done by now but I'm still plugging along. A few intense hours of shoveling and dashing around with a wheelbarrow last night made a nice dent in the compost pile. Like Patty, I always put off mulching. Usually it's because I just want to find one or two more plants to put in the ground. A few years ago I discovered this really nice fine chipped pine bark mulch. It's great for perennial beds because it stays loose and breaks down the soil quickly. Unfortunately it only comes in 3 cubic foot bags. Yesterday I picked up the first of what will probably be a few loads of 10 bags. For the wilder areas and shrub borders I'll get a truckload of shredded bark...as soon as I get rid of that compost. Tomorrow Mindy (arbo retum) and her husband are stopping by for a garden visit and then out to dinner in Hartford. Many wintersown annuals starting to come into their own: Flanders poppy, Centaurea Blue Diadem, several linarias, globe gilia, chrysanthemum Primrose Gem, also tri-color daisy, venidium fastuosum, paper daisies, schizanthus, nemesia, leptosiphon, mimulus, pink baby's breath, alyssum, pansies. Petunias are close, but no cigar yet. No snapdragons yet, either.

In perennials, I have red rose (name forgotten), centaurea montana, nepeta, baby pink foxglove - very pretty!, geum still, amsonia, geraniums (pink and blue), sweet william, columbines, wallflower (still), Japanese bluebells, spheralcea munroana, and violas still going strong.

In the herb garden I have valerian, chamomile, and feverfew - rather white out there now!
