Red Flag Fire Warning For Much of State Thursday

Okiedawn OK Zone 7

It is that time of the year, y'all.

The NWS has issued a Red Flag Fire Warning for much of the state. The timing of the warning may vary from one portion of the state to another, but for most of us it begins at 11 am and ends at 6 or 7 pm. Some portions of the region that do not have the Red Flag Fire Warning do have a High Wind Advisory or a Lake Wind Advisory.

While some of us are seeing significant green-up, there still is a great deal of cured vegetation that is either dormant or dead and which provides fuel for fires.

Remember that the low Relative Humidity and high wind speeds associated with Red Flag Fire Warnings also are very hard are young, tender vegetation that can dry out quickly and suffer wind burn, so shelter young, tender plantings from the wind if you can. If you are already hardening off seedlings you've raised indoors by carrying them outside for a portion of each day, try to put them where today's winds won't beat them to death. While we usually talk about hardening-off in terms of sun exposure, we less often discuss the fact that the young, tender seedlings raised indoors need time to slowly acclimate to ever-increasing winds as well. (If you are new to hardening off seedlings you've raised inside yourself, give them an hour of outdoor light/wind the first day, two hours the second day, etc.).

I've linked the webpage from the NWS below so you can see at a glance if your county is shaded in hot pink to indicate the presence of the Red Flag Fire Warning. You can click on any county on the map to read the forecast, which includes a link to the text of any warnings. If you're in far NW or NE OK and cannot see your county on the linked map, you can go to the webpage for either the Amarillo office or the Tulsa office of the NWS to find similar data for your region.

I'm hoping to work out in the garden all day today, but may have to fight the wind every step of the way.
