Where else to get Burpee exclusives?

Well, of course from Burpee, on their website. But has anyone found a local outlet for the exclusive seeds? I've checked Home Depot, Lowes, Atwoods Horn Seed and Wal Mart. None have what I'm looking for. I'm just having a hard time choking up $4.95 for one packet of seeds, plus postage. Eventually I'll get over it, but in the meantime, where else to look?

If you're looking for an exclusive variety you see in the catalog but cannot find on the Burpee seedrack in the store, you may be out of luck. I cannot imagine anyone who is not affiliated with Burpee sells them legally, although some people have found some hard-to-find Burpee varieties at Hirt's. You might find what you're looking for on E-Bay. I have no idea if Hirt's is a reliable company because I've never purchased anything from them.

The Cook's Garden might have them, but they are affiliated with Burpee so the prices generally are about the same.

For a few years there, when you only could get Porterhouse and Brandy Boy in the catalog but not in stores, I did notice that the very first week the seed racks hit the stores, a handful of the 'exclusive' varieties were in a small display on top of the regular seedrack, but when that small amount of exclusive packets was gone, that was it--they didn't restock. I haven't even seen that the last couple of years.

Why not tell us which Burpee exclusive you're looking for? Maybe someone here already has it, isn't planning to sow a whole pack and would be willing to share? I wouldn't want to buy just 1 seed packet from Burpee either. By the time you paid postage, I expect the cost of the seed packet would have doubled.

If you will either post what exclusives you are looking for or send me an email I might have it. Yes their prices are on the high end. I usually end up buying some from them because they have several items besides tomatoes that does well here. Jay

I buy from Burpee if I can't find them anywhere else. Most of you are growing veggies, but they have what they say is an exclusive White Wedding zinnia (25 seeds for $4.95, bought 2 packets and can't find one). Didn't count, but almost all germinated. Also got a new blue annual salvia I couldn't find anywhere else, they say in their description that it is blue and it looks like that in their photo, but some are starting to bud in their 6-packs (finally got a lot planted out), and they look like they are going to be dark purple. That ticks me off. And the same thing happened with some blue catmint from another company. It is dark purple, I can live with that, but I checked my empty seed packet because I thought I bought those from Burpee, didn't, and the blossoms don't look anything at all like their photo. Should I complain to them for what I consider dishonesty? I know photos don't always show up true on the web, but still. I really feel sorry for people caught in the gas crunch, just to fill to the top from half takes about $17 for my 91 Honda Civic. The Europeans have been paying the equivalent of $5 for years now, but I think they use more mass transit, plus some people in our country have to commute long distances to their jobs, and we are so large and used to the convenience of driving everywhere. I drive very few miles any more, still under 70,000 on my car. It's really hurting low-income people, even middle-income people. The wealthier don't seem to mind, same with costs of heating and cooling their huge homes. Otherwise I don't want to argue about it and am not sure if there will be a solution, but people are sure mad about it, and I don't blame them for that. But darn Walmart, you have to drive way out to get to ours no matter where you live, plus they sell gas, too. I only shop there when I can't find what I want anywhere else. I do try to save seeds from plants that have done well in my yard, but not all are doing that well this year from last year's saved seeds, except the volunteer tomatoes I got on ebay last year as Big Boy and turned out to be cherry tomatoes, some are too hard to save, some are hybrids that may not grow again, and we've sure had enough rain. Just wander in and out of here now and then, usually I hang out on the OGR and winter sowing forums.

It's unrealistic to assume that all catalogue companies are going to be able to keep in stock something which may have become a "hot item"--that it took four months for your order to be filled sounds like they were trying to hunt down seeds to appease a difficult customer. ******* I understand that items may become unavailable due to crop failures and unpredictable demand. However, I believe that there needs to be communication ASAP with the customer, since most of the seeds or plants need to be started on a particular date. If they were "trying to hunt down seeds to appease a difficult customer", don't you think they would have told me that? Also, I would think that the larger seed companies would have less problems, do to having larger inventories. And I'm not sure if those were the reasons in my case, since this was not one or two items in my order that were delayed or unavailable, but around 15 items (about half my order). They couldn't even get me starter onions until June. I ended up buying them our of a barrel at the grocery store. There was no communication from them about the status of my order, until I contacted them in July to cancel the unfilled items in my order (around 10 items). They are also not honoring my request at that time that they remove me from their catalog mailing list. Mike

Mike - I didn't visit any sites this morning other then my email, my bank and two forums here at gardenweb - appliances and figs. I didn't open any other links. Now I do use Firefox exclusively but I'll have to check to verify Ad Block Plus has been downloaded. I assumed I had it because I so seldom get pop ups - and this one was so odd because it happened every time I opened a new message but it only happened here at the Garden Web for about 10 minutes and then it disappeared. OK - I'm going to check for Ad Block now. Thank you again everyone.

In our area, Home Depot did have a reputation of subcontracting work to whichever contractor was first through the revolving door. At that time, their payments to the installer were too low to attract the better quality workers. However, I've been told that they now use installers who actually work for Home Depot as employees. I know a fellow who is a licensed plumber and general contractor who has taken a position with them for overseeing the installation work for several stores in his region. So, they seem to be investing some more time and money in their service offerings, instead of just treating them as a cash cow. My partner's ex had Lowes contract for extensive exterior work on a home in central Illinois. The work they did was substandard and they charged her for several more squares of siding than were required. He was able to get her a substantial settlement from Lowes to have the work redone correctly. I think they were expecting that an absentee, single female homeowner wouldn't know the difference but they weren't counting on that small town network extending to her new location. They sold her on the services by using the Lowes name but then brought in Joe Schmo's siding company whose reputation was too poor to attract customers on a standalone basis.

Heck YEH??? Whatcha looking for? Believe it or not, I found a packet of Armenian "Yard Long" seeds by Ferry Morris at the east side Walmart last weekend. I was just at lowes this evening, but I have a few other un-scheduled visits to marchums (sp?) nursery and probably ace soon. And Heaven only knows where else I might just leisurely stop & shop.....(I'm in the market for light-weight row covers).....

I am like you, sometimes I just cannot see spending what they want for seeds in some places. I am scared of ferry-morse, then I had a friend of mine direct me to this place and the prices are wonderful, the selection is great, the "shop" gets very high marks from Dave's, cannot beat the price!

I think it is Brandy Boy she is looking for. Diane had a few seed that she is sending to me along with a few other things, but I will just try to start the seed here and bring seedmama a couple of plants to the swap if they grow OK for me. She probably wants to plant a lot more than I will have seeds for. I have not seen any Burpee racks in the store yet, just Ferry-Morse. Maybe she will answer tonight.

Seedmama, yesterday I had been at woods at Norman, they have lot of seeds on sale at 40%, I saw few tomatoes seeds packets as well. -Chandra

All of the TLC greenhouses carry a Burpee seed rack. I just called the one on the N.W. highway and the lady said she had a rack and the TLC on Memorial rd. has one also. If they don't have exactly what you need maybe they will order it and save you the shipping. Maybe!

Seedmama, I just opened a package from Burpee that has a pack of Brandy Boy and a pack of Big Daddy in it. There are not many seeds in either pack, but I can send you 10 seeds each it you want them.

Phooey!

Marcum's doesn't have ANY seeds out. In fact...they were pretty bare on anything. I did find a few cauliflower & brussel sprout plants out behind all the pansies. Ace doesn't have much out at all. One lonely display of Ferry-Morse.

Wow! What wonderful friends I have here! Each of you is so kind! And Carol gets the golden crystal ball for reading my mind.

Miraje, Ez, Chandra & Telow, thanks for the wonderful suggestions. I really appreciate them. Now that the TLC in Midwest City is gone, I rarely think of them. The only time I'm already in the neighborhood is when I'm transporting a sick child to and from the doctor, and that's hardly the time to stop and peruse the seed rack. I need to make it a destination. The nice folks at Atwoods may be thinking about turning me in for harrassment. I've been calling every day since December 26 to ask if the seed racks are up. I recognize their voices, so I know they recognize mine! I had never thought to call Marcums, but just did and they told me they carry a different brand, not Burpee. Ez, Remy is a lovely lady. We used to trade seeds before she opened her shop. She was a wonderful trader, so I'm not at all surprised she is doing well with her business. I am happy for her, and you are in good hands.

Carol and Paula, thanks for looking for me. We girls love a good hunt!

One thing is for sure, no one on this forum will ever go tomato-less unless they want to! Sorry for the slow response. I returned to work on Tuesday after what I'm calling a pseudo-FMLA leave of absence. The first week back into the routine is tough.

It is good to know about TLC and Burpee. You just cannot find those seeds anywhere anymore! I am going up there today. I was looking at their 'flash broccoli' on their website and hope they have a pack.

I just got back from the TLC on memorial and they had burpee seeds, but none of the exclusives, just the regular seeds.

broccoli seeds are hard to find for some reason this year I noticed...
