Against a wall = hotter than usual, so you'd want to water more often, but a foot a year seems realistic, especially if you gave them some low-strength fertilizer several times during the main growing season (spring / summer). I'm guessing by MFPC you mean Pachycereus marginatus?

First thing that I'd look to are iron deficiency and pH. Here's a chart with the basics of systematic leaf conditions. It's not always so cut and dry, but these are the basics... http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/vista/html_pubs/hydro/symptoms.html Since it's the easiest fix, I'd get a water soluble micronutrient product and use that first. A common formula is Iron, Zinc, and Manganese (not to be confused with Magnesium.) If it works, and you're growing in the ground, then check with your local county ext. to see if it's a common deficiency. If it is, then you know the fix. If it isn't then you'll want to discover what could be interfering with nutrient uptake. Common causes are imbalances where a surplus of one nutrient/mineral affects another, and pH issues. Good luck. :-) Oh, it could be herb. drift, but iron deficits aren't uncommon. Edit: Dave posted while I was typing... I basically agree. Especially since micro-nutrient supplementation is so simple, and plants usually respond quite quickly to their application, I'd try that first. If it's herbicide drift, they're damaged beyond repair, and there's no sense worrying about that until you've ruled out the easy fixes.

Based on what I read and my own experience, Jordan seems to grow faster than a couple of other Shirasawanum such as 'Aureum' and 'Autumn Moon'. it also depends upon your zone and other factors. For mine, in very cold zone 5a/b, planted in ground in a mostly sun location, without any fertilizer, it grows ~ 9-12" per year for the first couple of years since I have them. Also younger trees grow faster. Japanese maples in our zone grow slowly due to our short grow season.

If a very slow growing scion is grafted on a vigorous rootstock, will the overall plant grow over time to a small scion on a large diameter trunk? (I know that the standard won't grow taller) How much influence does the vigor of the rootstock have on the growth rate of the scion? What is the growth rate of dwarf conifer scions grafted on a rootstock compared to dwarf conifers grown from rooted cuttings (no rootstock) ?
