Divided August Moon leaves

Hi all,

This spring, I divided 3 August Moon hostas, and planted the divisions around a Linden tree. Now, this was my first division, and I waited a bit late to do it. The leaves had reached a full size when I dug them up (it was awkward to say the least). Anyhow, the new divisions are still alive, but I left the old, full-sized leaves on them. Right now the full sized leaves look ratty, and many have split at the stalk from the wind blowing. Only one has begun to develop new, smaller leaves at its base.

Should I lop off the full-sized leaves altogether? I left them there assuming they would aid the plant's recovery through photosynthesis, but the hosta may not have developed sufficient roots to offset their top-heaviness.

If they are green then they are feeding the roots. There is no "need" to cut them off. And, probably no great need to keep them now. Did you cut the crown to make this division or did you separate eyes with roots, it you cut the crown then there may be some loss this year but not much next year.

It just really doesn't sound like there is any problem going forward. "Going Forward", am I beginning to sound like a political commentator.

my best advice .... dig one up and find out what is going on.. where you cant otherwise see ... underground ...

on all plants... grow the roots... and the plant will follow ...

unfortunately .. you cant see them.. unless you dig one up ...

next... admit it... its september... all the plants are starting to look ratty ... for a lot of us up north ... nothing you will do.. will extend the season ...

so ... once you confirm roots are growing... replant .... and just say to yourself... see you next season ..

Okay...so I know I am just getting anxious! LOL...I just wanted to see a few new leaves trying to unfold or something!! LOL Thanks for the heads up on the Hosta club here in KY Ken. I will look that up and see if it is nearby. Im in the Lexington area...so it may be. Usually things are either here or in Louisville. And thanks for the pics Char. That Elegans is stunning! I think I have mine in a really good place too...so when it gets as nice and big as yours it is going to really shine in the garden. And that August moon is really cute. I liked the brightness of it as well. Right now I have it planted between two Japanese Painted Ferns...and the color contrast is really nice. Thanks for your replies guys!

Could be Royal Standard. The easiest way to tell the difference between RS and Honeybells is the flower color. RS has pure white flowers. Honeybells has violet-white flowers. Both are of the plantaginea family and flower in August. I'll get a photo of the flowers this summer to be sure. Thanks for your help on this one. Steve

I don't grow the second hosta. But I have August Moon. Mine gets good light in the morning and afternoon late sun. It is very gold at this time. So I like the second of the August Moon shots. Which does not mean the first AM shot is not correct maybe for YOUR plant. It is a fine line between chartreuse and gold and the light plays a big role. Take a look at this shot of a hosta after I put up my "yella umbrella" in the area. I was thrilled with the color changes, the softening of shadows, but as far as being the actual or REAL color of the hosta, not real. But I did not Photoshop anything, it was just the lighting conditions. Ken mentioned that pro photographers who came to his place brought white reflective umbrellas to assure the color was balanced. I might try to figure a way to use a white reflector myself, without buying a professional setup. But here is another of the yella umbrella photo examples, near but not UNDER the yella umbrella. August Moon is in the pot with the church steeple, and is the smoother leaf....the corrugated leaves belong to Midas Touch. This is a favorite arrangement of gold hosta from MasonHollow.

No wonder those leaves looked so familiar, 'many', we have two 'Moraine Locust' trees, and one 'Sunburst Honey Locust'! Is 'Starburst' a newer hybrid? To stay 'on topic' I also have created a new bed out front, with 'August Moons' lining the front edge! I purchased several pots of that hosta and divided them up (year before last) and they are all doing great this year. I expect they will make an impact on the whole look of this area and they are not terribly 'pricey' so if anyone is so inclined to rob me of them--I CAN, hopefully, replace them w/o great expense! What I am noticing in this new area, is the impact of sun exposure! Some get more and others less--and, of course, most of those getting more are responding as you'd think!!! However, (always an exception it seems) one of them that is never exposed to full sun is almost outdoing the others!! Why is that? Oh yeah, I think I recall the comment made that hosta in less sun get larger leaves, but increase less than those exposed to full sun! Hmmmmm! Gonna have to think on that one, some more!

Then they are going to be fine next year. Save other problems unrelated to dividing.
