sweet autumn clematis just will not survive the winter for me

I have tried sweet autumn clematis year after year, and I always lose it over the winter. This would have been a definite Z5 winter, temps were not extreme for us, and I had a small, 1-year-old, plant from Bluestone Perennials which was in a raised holding bed with other shrubs which thrived. Against, the house, I had a sweet autumn clematis on a trellis - this was a 2-gal pot I'd purchased and planted last summer, and which put on a lot of new growth over the growing season. I have a couple of other clematis vines and have never lost them.

Has anyone else in this range (we are either 4b or 5a, hard to tell from the maps) had similar problems with this plant?
