Hi, I am new to the forum and working on my list of cool season plantings. So far I have onions, cabbage, leeks, broccoli, carrots, and lettuce. All these are in the "pre-plant" stage (meaning they are seeds). I am researching which ones to plant now in the greenhouse and which ones I can sow in the ground. I have an OSU extension guide and I think I can figure it out, except for the leeks, which are not on the list, nor have I grown them before. I didnanforum search and did not find much help. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, I bought non-GMO seeds from Clear Creek Seeds, an Oklahoma supplier, and there is no planting info on the seed packet. I live in Norman, which I think is zone 7b. Thanks!

Cool season annuals are those planted in early spring/early fall (in places with mild winters) and usually replaced by warm season annuals when it starts to get hot. They look the best when nights are in the 40s, but many are hardy (tolerate frosts) and some can make it through the summer.. they just won't look as good. The most common are: pansy, viola, sweet alyssum, linaria, diascia, nemesia, snapdragon, lobelia, bacopa, dianthus, cornflower, calendula, nasturtium, stock, poppies, ornamental kale and cabbage, sweet pea, argyranthemum, regal geraniums, dusty miller, primrose, larkspur and delphinium. Some of those might be perennials in you climate. The list of warm season annuals is endless and I could name hundreds, but they're basically all the annuals that weren't listed above. I just wanted to point that in late April you'll most likely use only cool season annuals, as it'll probably be too cold to the warm season ones get going. Mauricio

What to plant following what was planted depends. Cool season plants sucha as peas can be followed by tomatoes, peppers, etc. Cool, and long season plants such as the cabbage family will be there for the full growing season most places. Beans could follow lettuces which could then follow the beans. Lay out your garden and look at what you want to grow and which need to be in early and will fade out in heat. Then look at what you want to grow that should be planted during really warm weatehr and see where it fits in the total plan.

Mary, it will take broccoli and cauliflower plants at least 2 months to make a crop. By then, it is normally too hot so that if the insects do not get them first, the quality of the heads will not be worth your efforts. The same story with peas. The heat will likely kill them about the time that they start producing. Carrots planted now might produce a crop that you can harvest in the early fall if you plant a variety that is somewhat heat tolerant. In this area, to successfully grow these cool season crops, you need to start in February and be prepared to cover them if the temps drop into the 20's.

Bon, Home-made seed tapes work just fine. You can find instructions all over the internet. Just be sure you let them dry thoroughly before you put them up to await the day you plant them. If you put them up wet, the flour/water paste can turn moldy. You can use newsprint (not the glossy inserts), paper towels cut in strips, toilet paper, etc. Rodney, It is nice to have you visit us from the land of ice and snow. I hope our endless conversations about the early arrival of warm weather (it arrives every week, stays a few days, and then turns cold again) doesn't make you too crazy. Spring may arrive early here sometimes, especially compared to how late it arrives there for you, but then the cold nights keeps coming back and coming back and coming back. I'll had the temperature go down to freezing when tomato plants were knee-high to waist-high and covered in fruit. Last year, we harvested our first tomatoes on the last day of April (from plants protected on cold nights with frost blanket type row covers), sliced up that tomato, made BLTs and enjoyed every bite. That night or maybe the next night, we had our last freezing temperature of the year. By then, I had tomato plants that were 4' tall and loaded with fruit. C'mon now, is that normal? Nope, but we have to deal with whatever wild, crazy ride the OK weather brings us in any given year. So, while we talk of planting early, we also have to protect plants relatively late. What a terrific grow list you have! I would have thought you'd have idea conditions for the brassicas and for potatoes. Even here, potatoes do well most years, but if we fail to harvest them in time, the heat and humidity can make them collapse into a soggy, rotted mess some years (not necessarily all). Bon, I agree with Rodney. To my taste buds, garlic tastes like garlic. I like it all and never have had any I haven't liked. Today's weather-related surprise (Rodney, you should skip this little announcement of mine if you love asparagus and if the thought of us harvesting it now is going to make you crazy): this afternoon, while working in the garden, in 70-something-degree heat, I harvested the first asparagus spear. I washed it off, pinched off the tip that had been in the ground, broke it in half, and Tim and I stood there and ate that tender, yummy taste of spring. We both were shocked. I am pretty sure we've never harvested asparagus in early February before. I'm not even sure if we've ever had any to harvest in late February. March is more typical. This needs its own thread, and maybe it will get one later, but here goes. Today, at the Wal-Mart in Gainesville, TX, across the Red River from us, they had all kinds of veggies. All kinds. Including tomato plants and a handful of pepper plants. It is far too early for tomato plants--even Gainesville's average last freeze date surely cannot be much earlier than mine (March 28th) and far, far, far too early for pepper plants. So, what's a gardener to do? Especially when their own tomato plants are just tiny sprouts? Yep, I did it. I bought one of each variety they had: Big Beef, Early Girl, Celebrity and Sweet 100. They were in small (maybe 3 or 4") round peat pots. I repotted them into gallon pots and they are sitting on a shelf in my mudroom. I was going to put them in the unheated greenhouse but we're headed for a low in the 30s tonight more than likely, and I had left the doors open all day until sunset so there was no build-up of heat to keep them warm. It is likely that the first tomato we harvest in April will come from one of these plants. I hope the folks at that store remember to cover up the plants this weekend when we're expected to get pretty close to freezing. And for anyone in my neck of the woods wondering if the Wal-Mart in Ardmore has any tomato plants in the store, they did not, as of yesterday. Usually Gainesville gets them at least a week or two before Ardmore does. Oh, and we had to go across the road to the Gainesville Home Depot to get something Tim needed. I made a beeline straight to the garden center and they had the exact same tomato plants and pepper plants that Wal-Mart had, as well as all the cold-season veggies and herbs and tons of flowers. After he found what he came for, he had to come drag me out of the garden center because I was going to stay out there with all those plants all day.

I would start the leeks now. I have onion seed started. The only reason I haven't started all of my onion seed is because I'm waiting on some varieties to arrive. I've been told to start onion and leeks in this area 8-12 weeks before time to plant out. If you are in 7b you might be a little late. I hope to have all of my onion seeds sowed by Jan. 15th and I'm in zone 6a. I usually plant out from March 10th forward. Jay

Jay, does that apply to green onions/scallions too? I have a seed packet of evergreen bunching onions, and since I'm ordering the rest of my onions as bulbs from Dixondale I'm not sure when to start these or whether to start them inside or outside.

Miraje, I'm sure Jay can answer your question better than I, but I will through in my 2 cents worth. The onions you see in the picture are Lisbon bunching onions. I don't know the date they were started, but they were started some time after the sweet potatoes above above them, which I think I stuck them in the window around Xmas or New Years. (Just the end of a potato was stuck into the potting soil)

When I start onions in the garden they suffer a lot of abuse because I cant see them when they are small. The date on the picture is Feb. 22, so I expect they were started in the first half of Jan.

Some of those onions are still growing and multiplying well, others fell victim to hungry people.

Hmm, I may need to get another seed starting tray then. I only bought the one for tomatoes and peppers, so I didn't even think about the onions.

Speaking of green onions, I just found a thread here that was posted about this time last year. It looks like maybe they'd do okay outside afterall if I wait a little longer to plant.

Miraje, I'm glad you posted that link because it shows me that the onions I pictured above cant be over a month old.
I was asking Dawn about onions in the first half or Feb.

For green onions and scallions it depends on how early you want to harvest. I just plant my onions twice as thick as they should be when transplanting to the garden and then pull every other one for green onions. If planting for green onions you aren't worried about them forming large bulbs so you could always start and transplants some later. I don't as I like to get all my onions ect planted and out of the way so I don't have a lot to do when it is time to pot up tomato and pepper plants. If it was me I would try to get them started by the first of Feb. I have seen some say you can start them for green onions and scallions as late as 28 days before you average last frost. TO me that is a little late. But then like I say about planting garlic. Today is better than tomorrow and anytime is better than not planting at all. Jay

An Oklahoma Gardening segment a while back featured leeks. Kim Rebek recommended starting them in Aug and transplanting them a month or so later and then mulching well so they will overwinter. Start picking in March/April. I have leeks in my garden outside now that I started in February of last year and transplanted in April. We've eaten a few and I left some to overwinter.
