I can remember most on the list and could add a few. Hula hoops,shooting marbles at recess and after school and jump rope. What I miss the most is every weekend during the winter there was a neighborhood card game for the parents and the kids played and ate well. In the summer on many Saturday evenings there would be a neighborhood baseball game and everyone sat around and visited, ate and had fun. Jay

Obviously, I grew up in the '50s. It is sad that neighbors don't get together now as they used to. Life was simpler and sweeter, then. Seems we don't have enough time to have fun, anymore!

I remember all except "Snake Dance", and I ain't growd up yet. I can also remember when you wore Thongs on your feet. You can't guess where they stick them now.

And in the country in July, a favorite activity of the younger crowd was catching June Bugs, tying a 4 ft long string around them and turning them loose to fly circles around your head--until you mom or dad told you to let the poor thing go.

The slamming of screen doors
Giant luna moths hovering near the screen door on spring evenings
Riding little skateboards down the middle of the street (little, narrow skateboards that were barely wide enough to hold your feet!)
Making homemade ice cream for ice cream socials after church or end-of-the-baseball parties when the youth baseball (for boys only back then) season ended
Catching horned toads and making pets of them, carrying them around in shoeboxes filled with sand
Riding or bikes or running behind the city truck that was spewing a mist of mosquito-killer that I'm guessing likely was DDT....how stupid we were then!

Hip huggers (Red Snap jeans)
Body suits
Pink foam cushioned rollers
Dippity-Doo hair gel
Bobby pins and pin curls
The little plastic rain bonnets all the ladies wore to protect their Sunday hairdo when it rained
Grocery stores before UPC codes so each item had a price sticker on it, or the cashier had to call for a price check
Swamp coolers and space heaters before we got central heat and air
Using little hand clippers to 'edge' the lawn alongside the curb, driveway, sidewalk, etc.

Does anyone remember fire escapes from school buildings that were just metal slides from the 2nd story?

I remember buying tiny tomato seedlings at Wolfe Nursery in Texas. The pots couldn't have been any bigger than 2" x 2" and the transplants were miniscule. The plants were maybe 10 cents each.

Riding the bus to downtown Fort Worth to go shopping and then eating at the counter in the Woolworth store.
Cold soda pops in glass bottles with metal bottle caps...and they cost a nickle or a dime
And, even though I was pretty young at the time...around 1965 or 1966, I remember going to Saturday afternoon movie matinee's with a group of neighborhood kids and then getting sodas or malts at the drugstore next door which still had a counter with stools, a few booths and a soda fountain.

Playing Duck, Duck, Goose, Hide-N-Seek, and Tag
Sitting on the front porch shelling peas...at home, at my aunt's house, at my grandmother's house.....or anywhere else we went
Watching my aunt make her own brown sugar in a cast iron skillet
Walking to and from school every day...kids everywhere....with no adults in sight except for the school crossing guards

Life seemed so much simpler then.

May Day, where you delivered a cupcake paper holder full of goodies to your friends' houses? We would run up, knock or ring the bell, and scream "MAY BASKET"!!! and run back to the car?

Girls couldn't wear jeans, long pants, or shorts to school?

Pep rallies and bonfires?

Burning your trash in the back yard? (Didn't have trash pick up)

Floor furnaces? (I used to burn my socks trying to dry them on the floor furnace - yikes!)

Having babies at home, instead of the hospital?

Saying the Pledge of Allegiance before school started?

The only pizza was Chef Boyardee in a box that you had to make?

TV Dinners wrapped in foil cuz they had to be baked in the oven?

I remember when we got our first refrigerator, never had a TV. we were lucky to get anything on the radio, like Boston Blackie, Johnny Dollar, Sky King, Bobby Benson and B bar B ranch, Uncle Remus, Sargent Preston. Jack benny.

I never needed a T,V., I could see them in my mind.

My first car was a 52 ford victoria hard top, $300.00 of hard earned money at $25.00 a month. I would sure like to have that car now, or the old model A that dad sold to Mr. pichford for $50.00. I can remember him saying as we would come out of town onto the straight stretch "well I'm gonna pull'er ears back" as he would pull the throttle and spark back toward the seat (they were on each side of the steering column just under the steering wheel) and away we would go.

I think we were just about the last people in town to get a black and white TV, and Dad controlled what we watched.
