Care of Hardy Fuchsias in Pots

We have about a dozen pots of hardy fuchsias, about 2-3 years old. A recent column by Ciscoe Morris in the Seattle P-I recommended repotting hanging fuchsias (didn't sound like he was talking about hardy fuchsias), by washing the old soil off the roots with warm water and repotting them with new soil. Do you recommend doing this for hardy fuchsias?

Ours are still in their original soil and have done reasonably well, especially considering the rather low competence level of their caretakers. We had to go to pots since the original ones that we put in the ground ended up being dessert for deer.

We would also appreciate any other helpful hints on their care as spring nears. TIA!
