I ordered crocus bulbs before, and they said to store in a dry dark cool location, and plant in fall. I think I planted mine early in fall. We had a mild winter and the came up in November! Then they came up again in spring. Most peoples basements aren't dry, but that would be my first choice. Maybe if you store them in some seed starting mix, it will be better. I just bought a bag at Walmart and it says great for storing bulbs, on the bag.

I would plant them right now. Having been prechilled, they will probably bloom as soon as they form a decent root system. You will probably have crocus blooms in June or July this year. Definitely a conversation piece. The foliage that they put out should reenergize them enough to bloom at the proper time next spring. It's possible that their timing has been thrown off enough that they skip blooming next year but come back the year after. However, I think they'll do fine next year.

That is exactly why I'm in opposition to immediate planting.

If they can be stored till fall, and it seems like it's a possibility of doing that, I'd rather wait for another 4-5 months and plant them at a proper time.
If storing them is not an option, then by planting them spy_ri have nothing to lose.

Oh, man! It seems like there's divided opinions, and you all sound right to me! This disgusting rain is at least going to put me off from making a move for at least a week now- the soil is like soup. Having blooming crocus in July sounds so so wrong to me but I want whatever will give the bulbs their best chance to make it. My basement is dampish at best, and is flooding *right now*!!! (So so sick of this rain.) Thank you all for your advice so far, if anyone else has any suggestions, I am so grateful for the great experience Gardenweb people share!
