Northern Exposure OP Seedlings - 2nd year NE has had some streaked seedlings.

Paul, How many seedlings did you have to grow to get the streaked ones and what breeders do you have? Where your seedlings started by you or did they start in the ground on their own?

Steve, I don't know about Night Before Christmas becoming HOTY. I purchased mine when I first got the hosta bug, but I wouldn't buy it again now. It does grow fast and catches people's attention with it's bold center, but mine is prone to leaf cracks that look rusty (I guess from our water or the clay). I also don't like the haphazard growth habit; it just ends up looking messy.

Mctavish, I have a Niagara Falls too, but still only single eye in second year, and looks very different to that beauty you have. Yes, how long did it take to grow it, and in which light conditions? Thanks!

Bernd, talking with a local grower - they think there are a couple of Niagara Falls versions that have been sold. Sadly, mine does not have the tight regular ripples like in McT's pic and the others posted here. Mine is just wavy.

The seedlings are really quite impressive and over the top!!!

By now, I'm sure you realize how rare and special "your" plant is. A Sieboldiana that consistantly gives speckled and streaked seedlings that grow well; nothing more to say.

Anything on your wish list? Perhaps a big 'Coles Prostrate' hemlock...

Melissa and I talked recently about visiting you - but don't think that will happen this year. Still haven't started the garden for that CP, but been thinking about it.

my Niagara Falls leaves have only 11 waves the most, and are dark green. Mine is only 1 eye for the second year, got it last Sept. from Bridgewood. mctavish's and those in the hosta Library have 'piecrust' leaves and are lighter green. I should wait how it looks next spring then, perhaps it will mature towards the correct look. If not, I have others which are green and have waves, no reason to keep it then. Thanks!

For those of you interested in Niagara Falls, I posted some pictures of the growth of my plant. My experience is probably not typical but you can see how the plant changes if you disturb it. Yours might be rippled if you wait a year and don't poke at it.

Thanks for those informative photos in the other thread! So I will wait longer than a year to give my plant a chance to develop, and I might get one looking like yours way in the future. Bernd
