Large leaves in perennial borders

Dan Hinckley gave a lecture in nh this week and he stressed the importance of LARGE leaves in perennial beds.their large solid mass is needed to interrupt the possible boring continuum of little leaves. i was thinking about this in my garden today. i have a bed with some perennials, but many deciduous shrubs and conifers. in a part of this bed, i have Rosy glow berberis next to a Rosa glauca, burgundy next to grey/blue. unfortunately, the plant habit and the tiny leaves of each shrub- look too similar. what i hit upon as a solution- i owe to gertrude jeckyll. she reportedly had her helpers/staff move potted hostas around her beds as the season and the spot demanded. so i think i will put a large blue hosta in a nice but unnoticeable pot, raise it up on something such that both the pot (and the support) will be hidden by the foliage around it, and put it between the berberis and the rosa glauca. its not a bed with all day hot sun, so i think this will work!
