Opinions on the looks of this Hosta Leaf Please

HI everyone!

I know it is that time of year where hostas start to not look there best.

But I have one plant, new this year, that has one leaf that I just wanted to get an opinion about. I am hoping that it is me just being a worry-wart, but just want to make sure it is not more than the usual looks of late summer.

I have one leaf that has 2 spots of brown. THe only reason why I question is because it seems to be within a pair of veins which may be nematodes.

Now, I have no other hostas with this at all. I got this hosta new this spring, and it has been in a pot the whole time, not in the hosta bed, so I am lucky there if it is something bad.

As a note, I did try to do the water test with a small piece of the brownish part of the leaf, and came up with nothing under the magnifier. However, I probably should of taken a bigger chunk of leaf, but did not want to do so until I took pics of it.

Ken, did you click on it to make it larger? Well, whether you did or not, I'll go back to the drawing board and fetch you a larger pic. :) I'm pretty confident about the 'Sweet Home Chicago' because its tag has stayed with it since the day it came. Of course, if the vendor was mistaken... but it looks like three out of the four Hosta Library pics. The first pic has a leaf at a strange angle which makes it look rounder than it is, I think. one mans treasure ... was the first hosta to have red go from the petiole.. into the leaf center .... hence it is a treasure to peeps who are breeding for red leaves ... heresy to me .. but whatever rocks their boat, is fine with me ... blue betty lou is named after clarence owens wife.. betty lou.. believe it or not ... medal of honor.. i had a nice little clump.. a good friend with a son in the services wanted a piece ... and i gave her one with a salute.. and mine has been completely unstable ever since .... i dont know what its plan is in life ... not much opinion for the OPoster.. just a bunch of stories today ... ken

a scale would help .... it looks too big for GT ... but no scale ... too pointed also ... PEACE comes to mind.. check the third pic at the library .... why are yours so shiny ... overhead watering.. but the new interior flush is glaucous ... ken

Jaqueline, it is interesting his explanation for the fact that only the tips of the leaves are burnt. I would like to look for information on this fact. Is it possible that the rose bush stops sending sap to some parts to preserve others from death? I mean if that botanically is possible? I will imagine the explanation of the process. Maybe it's a crazy idea but I'll expose it: It occurs to me to think now what happens in autumn. As temperatures drop, the rosary is ready for winter. Before dropping the leaves the rose bush "recovers" the nutrients from the leaves and accumulates them in the roots. Then, since it is not going to specify the leaves for photosynthesis, the amount of abscisic acid and ethylene increases, and this increase causes that in the zone of abscission (leaf-to-stem bonding) the leaf detachment finally occurs . In this case it is not a matter of recovering the nutrients from the leaves nor does the rosal need to be detached from them because it will continue to specify them for photosynthesis and transpiration. Ethylene and abscisic acid do not increase and so leaf detachment does not occur (leaf senescence). It only allows the tips of the leaves to die, leaving the part that is possible to them alive. This part of the saved leaf of death will continue to be useful for photosynthesis. Hahahaha Sorry It was just an idea of what could happen. Should be an amateur with botanical knowledge who could tell us if this is really the process or we are in error.

Figures!

Ok, well, this plant is rather new, and has never been in the ground yet. IT has also been atleast 10 feet away from any other hostas. Is there still a possibility of a spread?

What should I do next? Boiling water? Just remove the bad leaves?

I have been so good at keeping all bad things away from my hostas, I really do not want to introduce nematodes now.

DO I have to treat the roots?

Should I still do the magnifying test just incase in another way?

Firstly, I'd bring it back to where you bought it and ask for your money back. That plant was sold to you with nems. If you can't get your money back, I'd still toss it; pot, soil and plant directly in a plastic bag and into the trash. Don't try to "cure" this plant, get rid of it.

As for possible spread, it is possible to spread nems through overhead watering. If the watering was in proximity to other plants then it could have been spread. With it being not near any other plants, chances are you didn't spread it. But it's still possible.

Sorry to mention that, but I have several this year with such spots, all were nem free last year. Perhaps I used clippers to transfer nems. So I will have to live with them, keep spraying.

the brown section is already dead.. i suggest you try the water torture on green tissue in the same vein ... just to see if the test works ...

a bug can not live in dead tissue ...

regardless.. you have them ..

Well, I really have not had it long at all so there is hope!

Probably I should just toss it and not take the chance. The only time it was near any others was on its way home next to a few others I bought. I hope they did not catch on them also. This was the only older one I got, others are young guys.

But out of curiousity, what is the "water torture" method? Is that the sitting in 120F for so many minutes, leaves and roots?

Is it worth cutting down all of the leaves at all?

lol.. no i meant putting a cut leaf in water.. to see if you can verify the squirmers ...

the nems do NOT fly thru the air ... and you are being overly paranoid about them leaping hosta to hosta across your whole garden ... just forget about all that...

there is a heat treatment.. and i will leave it to others to discuss it with you.. i am not sure it works ...
